I'd be curious to hear what the people who think you can tuck and roll out of anything would say about what to do in that guy's situation... the guy about to hit the ground, not the guy in green.

The idea is to tuck and roll before you get in a position like that. Like, when you're still in the air, not 1 inch from the ground.

Usually you are launched where you are launched.

if you look at the sequence of photos, it looks like this is his roll, having already hit pavement in the couple of shots prior.

But if you are launched, the goal is to tuck and roll immediately. When my front wheel collapsed, I did a sommersault and landed on my butt in a sitting position, and it all happened so fast I didn't know what happened until I found myself sitting on the ground staring at my bike 10 feet ahead of me. Now, how much of my tuck and roll was from training and how much of it was from luck, I may never know, and I hope to never find out.

If the photos in the sequence posted are in order, I think you are correct. The poor guy fell and then got taken out a second time while he was getting up.

How on earth do you practice tucking and rolling without messing yourself (or your bike) up in the process?

Get on the crappiest bike you own, wear pads or lots of layers if you want, then take turns riding through "the gauntlet", which is a stretch of grass lined with your buddies trying to knock you off your bike. Our junior team did this along with bumping and handling drills.

Also known as Japanese Keirin (and, this), except your buddies are also riding bikes, they're not crappy, everyone is padded, and the surface isn't grass, it's sandpaper.

I dunno, did anyone ask the guys pictured how they felt about being internationally infamous?

Dude in the back looks like his face is about to be pound into the pavement.

I'm glad you'd be able to laugh at yourself, but no matter how ridiculous the picture might look, I can't say that I condone laughter at someone who looks like they're about to be put into a world of hurt.

If I knew that he got off with a little bit of road rash, then I might find some amusement in the picture, but to see someone about to be hurt, potentially badly, is not something I can find hilarious.

Maybe it's because I had my face pounded into the earth while riding my bike once, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone else.

In any event, you can do whatever you'd please and I'll keep being a tightass as will the few others who've posted.

Enjoy.

i've seen some weird stuff in crashes, so I can't decipher this one.

But for a caption: "I kiss the ground you try to walk on."
