TdF Stage 2 - Pushing and shoving question

https://bit.ly/GMWNc or https://www.xs4all.nl/~ewoud/tmp/20090705_cavshove.mp4

Clearly Cavendish makes contact with the Skil-Shimano rider first. But was that initial contact justified? Looks like Cav was trying to keep on Renshaw's wheel, but surely there must have been a more tactful way to do it?

it doesn't really bother me to see this kinda thing...it scares me a bit to watch it but i think it's a bit of common practice for these guys. I bet some of the masters racers on here can tell you this kinda think happens (although not that blatant) a bunch in the amatuer ranks. i haven't been directly pushed off a wheel but i have had guys try to bully and elbow their way on to the wheel i've been on.

same here. i used to respond in kind. these days, it's not worth it to me.

the most all do is stick my knee out, point my elbows out, or give a slight tap/shove on the hip.

It's called Skil-Shimano guy hasn't earned his place at the tip of the spear yet...Cav shouldn't take his hands off the bars though.

non issue...these guys ride their bikes better with one hand then you and i do with both...it's not amatuer hour, they don't get yelled at by the race directors for stuff like that.

That's not the point. If you need to send a signal to someone give them a shoulder or head butt. Even in the pros it's considered just racing until someone's hand comes off.
