Dead Dog Classic race report

2009 was another successful year for the Dead Dog Classic. While the wind blew on Saturday, the weather was sunny and dry both days and we had a record registration with about 420 racers.

Congratulations to all of our G C winners:
SM Pro 1,2 Brad White
SM 3 David Brockbank
SM 4 David Edwards
SM 35+ Rich Davis
SM 35+, 3 Charles Knoll
SM 35+.4 Jeff Chapman
SM 45+ Jimi Gibson
SM 45+, 4 Geoff Cooper
SM 55+ Shannon Fox
SM 65+ Jim Dlouhy
SW 1,2 Joanne Kiesanowski
SW 3 Jane Finsterwald
SW 4 Kay Stolcis
SW 35+ Trish Heisdorffer

That wind did slow everyone down as there were no records set on the road race course, On average, the winning times for each category were about 11 minutes slower that last year. Not bad at all considering the wind was pretty fierce, especially at the top of the climb. At 10:30 the temperature up there was 46 degrees and the winds were about 25 mph sustained giving a wind chill in the lower 30ís. That makes for some tough racing which, coupled with the 8% finishing climb produced few sprints for wins. Only SM 55+ and SM 65+ had racers with equal times at the finish line.

The wind died down significantly on Sunday and the racing was fierce at the crit with just about perfect weather conditions. A break away stuck in the SM Pro 1,2, race and the SW 1,2 race was a solo effort for the win. Most other fields, however, saw field sprints for the victories.

The TT had a bit of wind but was not too bad as times were pretty close to last year and two new course records were set. SM 4 racer Peter Schimpf and SM 65+ racer Jim Dlouhy bested the previous fastest times.

By far the most dominating performance in a category was Joanne Kiesanowski who bested her SW 1,2 competition by over 14 minutes. Among the men, SM 4 David Edwards, SM 45+ Jimi Gibson and SM 65+ Jim Dlouhy had significant leads over the others in their categories. This was the second GC win for both Kiesanowski and Gibson

All results can be viewed on the ACA website. http://results.americancycling.org/results/

We hope to see you all back next year !

I forgot to say thanks to all the racers who came up to Laramie. If you survived the mosquitos, hope to see you next year.
