Fedrigo-Pellizotti was a classic sprint
Fedrigo played Pellizotti like a violin in the final sprint of stage nine of the tour.
In the last kilometer, Pelizotti sat on Fedrigo's wheel and wouldn't come around him, hoping to force Fedrigo to lead out the final sprint.
So Fedrigo played along. First, he went all the way over to one side of the road, as you always do in a final sprint, so that he would only have to look over one shoulder, knowing that the attack will always come from one side. Classic tactics in a two-man final sprint. Fedrigo is all the way over to the right side of the road, Pellizotti on his wheel. So far so good.
But then Fedrigo lays the trap for Pellizotti. He starts moving over to his left, leaving room on the right, but all the while still looking over his left shoulder. This is fresh meat for Pellizoti, who now says to himself, I can attack to the right while Fedrigo is looking left and get the jump on him. Pellizoti takes the bait and attacks, but he has gone way too early. He has played into Fedrigo's hands! Fedrigo gets on his wheel immediately and Pellizoti leads out the final sprint and Fedrigo gets around him and easily wins the stage!
Absolutely classic.

Agreed.
But I like the Sanchez sprint better. Watch the vid - and realize that he set it up to happen that way by timing the catch of Efimkin.

Almost as beautiful as Sanchez finishing off the previous stage. He brought Efimkin back at the perfect time and just early enough to make Casar's bid futile. He jumped on Casar with plenty of time to finish him off. Again - a lesson in timing and a thing of beauty.

From a GC perspective it was (and will continue to be till stage 15) a snooze fest. From a bike racing standpoint it was great stage.

And yes the Sanchez day was the ultimate in small group tactics. He played it perfectly, although i have to say, he is a superior racer to the others.

Am I the only one who thought Fedrigo sat up a little early? Maybe it was the angle on TV, but it looked pretty darn close, and like he sat up a few meters out.
But it was awesome sprint tactics, it was awesome to watch.

yeah I get those Russian dudes confused.
It's so hard to judge the gaps with a head-on camera angle, that's why I always like watching the helicopter shots - it's a view that gives a better feel for how it went down, as if you were there in the midst of it.

generally speaking, i would take pellizotti vs. fedrigo mano a mano any day-especially when
pellizotti took the lead in the final curve before the finish. he just faded and fedrigo still had
the legs to contest. pellizotti may have overestimated his sprinting legs & underestimated fedrigo's resolve.
franco's attacks are usually pretty explosive. guess the tourmalet and the long breakaway minimized those.
chapeau to fedrigo! to those that found it boring, you probably find chess and baseball boring
as well.

I enjoy interesting tactics and well timed sprints, particularly when the unpredictable occurs. But with limited free time during the day, stages like todays are not particularly interesting to me.
And I actually love to watch baseball.

Even an exciting race or stage still going to take 4-6 hours or more and so is going to have long stretches where not much is changing. In this respect, it is kind of similar to baseball, and for my money, they both make great background noise - have it on while you are working, look up every so often, start really paying close attention for the last half hour. So I don't really mind a "boring" stage like today when it's happening at a reasonable time; now if I'd gotten up at 5 am to watch it live?
