Helmet Cam: CCC Crit, June 7, 2009, Cat 3-4, Bethel, CT
On the same course as the Bethel Spring Series. BFer here won (he's since upgraded to 2, so congrats). Got third behind him and an NCC guy, regular in the CT/MA area.
Got an alternate view from a second guy carrying a cam. He was on my wheel going into the sprint so that was cool.
Only sorta-bummer was that I let the SRM go too far between charges and I had no data for the race. So I have no idea how hard I rode.

Heh, I had a cameo in that race.
I shoulda moved up earlier but thought I had a leadout. My teammate blew though.
He did everything right by chasing a break down with 3 to go, me on his wheel. I just didn't realize that he was tired because I wasn't. First leadout ever for me, I forgot that you get tired in the wind. Whoops...
I got 2nd in an earlier race that day, I was a little tired too. Next time.

Nice video cdr! Is that really considered a "crit" though, looks more like a circuit to me? I wish there were races like that around here! I am guessing there was no center line rule either?

Crit - any loop under x miles (2.2?). Since Bethel is under 1 mile, it's a crit. Just a no corner crit (that first turn really doesn't count, not compared to a stereotypical 4 corner, "around a few blocks" crit). It's one of the reasons why the spring series is popular - no crazy cornering necessary. It's like a long meandering group ride with a hill every 0.8 miles.
Initially I got this set up so I could relate to my then girlfriend the whole concept of "bike racing". Because it's definitely not what I see on TV - the all-day steady chase by a team, the field exploding on cobbles... that seems too cut and dry. "Real" racing, i.e. for us non-pros, is really chaotic, and it's very hard to capture that using motos, choppers, and stationary camreas.
(after seeing me pass a car she didn't want to see any more, but then I decided to share the vid on YouTube - that's the Summer Street Sprint one).
I'm tapped out on unedited clips for a bit. Just a training ride on the PCH and a descent down Palomar (the latter on a seatpost mounted Hero pointing backwards).

What length/grade is the bump? I'm thinking about coming out there one day, much easier drive then brooklyn. I don't do hills though.

I don't do hills either. A woman asked me, off the bike, if I was really trying when I got shelled by her and a bunch of other non-racers. I was totally at my limit and everyone just rode away from me.
The "boasting" grade is 6 to 8%, meaning that's what you tell people if you're trying to impress them. Apparently it's that grade for about 10 meters. The hill totals 150 meters, give or take (I jump at about 150 to go in that clip).
I rarely get into the 53x21, usually climb it in 15-19. If I'm struggling and look down, it's usually the 17 (4th cog). We go 18-24 mph. My wattage usually peaks at about 500-700 watts, 350-450 over the top, but you can coast a lot to recover.
Put it this way - I get shelled at Prospect and I make it at Bethel.
Since I can't go very hard for very long, it's not an aerobically challenging course if you sit in. If you're at the front it's hard.

There are summer races at Bethel during the week. Wed? DocM knows.
I'm not involved with those. I hold the spring series there, March and first part of April, until the "real" races get going. And Connecticut Coast Cycling (CCC) holds a crit there, typically in June.

Hey CDR - got the new camera (VholdR Contour HD) out for a test spin. Took it to a local noon ride in my kneck of the woods thought you might like to check it out.
Wide angle - and HD (although the upload is not HD) turned out pretty good. The HD source file is freaking amazing (and large)
Plan to order a Vimeo account so i can upload the HD versions here in a bit.
Will be taking it to a crit this Sun so should have some more footage.
Full vid of the ride so unless your bored with a 6 pack FFD to the last 75% to catch the last lap + sprint.

Hey bayarea- do you have any of the contourhd at 60fps?
I have a regular vholdr that will be mounted under my saddle looking rearwards and the contourhd on my bars and maybe the blackeye 2 on my helmet. I might mount the contourhd alternately on my helmet or my fork. Dunno yet.
