Yikes, thanks for posting.

Did you notice that half the guys that fell towards the back never even got touched before they went down? It was like they saw the guy eat it 10 riders up and decided, "Oh! That looks like fun, I think I'll join him!" and throw themselves to the ground. About 5 or 6 guys did it in unison... very weird.

The one into the back of the tanker trailer was even scarier looking.

Still not sure what happens there. Looks like he just unclips, and then panics.

I agree with the voices in the video - looks like he taps his front wheel on somebody's back wheel, starts to lose it, corrects, feels the bike lose traction and unclips, then just kinda skates right into the back of the truck. Ouch.

The word from cyclingnews and several of the rider's twitter feeds is that the roads were very dusty & oily from not having seen rain in a while. As long as the wheels are turning everything stays at an uneasy truce, but the moment anyone touches their brakes, their wheels lost all traction... and then everyone falls down.

Situations like that where the roads are dusty+slick are very, very dangerous. It is true that once the uneasy truce between momentum & traction is broken, falling down is usually what comes next.
