Does form ever just sneak up on you?

i seem to go from long stretches of feeling mediocre/below average to feeling great almost over night.

I dont feel it coming, I just have it all of a sudden.

then i get all freaked out when im simply doing an hour long tempo ride and feeling all great thinking its going to leave me before i can use it in a race.

yes, it happens occasionally. But more often form just runs away from me unexpectedly.

    Great post, Lith.

    A:
This used to happen more often, but I think that Form only "snuck up on me" because I didnt have enough previous experience with a periodized training schedule until recently. It wanst really sneaking up on me, I was doing the work to have it appear (consistent workouts, good recovery habits, etc...).
While I've only been training consistently for 40-45 months or so, I'm finally realizing/discovering how my body responds to certain training stresses. I'm feeling like the appearance of Form is less surprising now. I do my work, never miss a workout, recover well and I get faster. Not too strange.

But I know the feeling of not wanting to "waste" good Form. It's challenging not to go hard when you feel great.

This is one of the best thing about being self-coached, though. You really learn what/why/how certain blocks of work are designed for and how your body responds in the grand scheme. A good coach does this for you... you have a coach, right?

yeah i have a coach because im way too crazy to make my own plans.

i just do what im told no questions asked so i guess it makes sense that I would get surprised by form since i am not analyzing my workouts or plan.

i would say there's a difference between having "good form" consistently over subsequent days vs. randomly having a good day

oh, im talking about good form over multiple days. Not single days of good feeling. Ive always found that a random day of great feeling still doesnt feel as good as a regular day while in form anyway.

this current feeling has been going on for nearly a week so far

I think the coggan performance manager was developed to help make these times less random and more predictable.

My form is usually in hindsight...I didnt realize I had it til its gone...

I just started putting some intensity into my intervals the last week or so, and looking back at my downloads from last spring Im like "damn, I cant believe I was doing that!"

Over my 'off' season I lost approx. 15% from my FTP, and right now that feels like a lot

So I hope my form sneaks back up on me.

Dang. If I lost 50 watts off of my FTP... actually I don't want to to think about something that awful.

I still look back at the volume I was riding last spring and I'm surprised. I can't believe I was doing 60 mile rides afterschool in March...
