Deep tissue massage...
..is about as masochistic as bike racing. It hurts so bad but you know it's doing you good. I highly suggest it. I had one yesterday and feel like I spent the day in the gym.
I've been off the bike for two weeks with back issues and it's working a lot of tension out of my back, shoulders, pecs, and legs from last season.
Anyone else getting painfully amazing massages to help with bike induced issues?

Back in the day when I did triathlons regularly our sponsor paid for a massage therapist to work with us and travel with our team....deep tissue massage once a week.....felt great, and really took out any tight spots...helped with flexibility, and way reduced the overuse injury rate.
Also was great in the offseason. Our masseuse taught at a physical therapy school, and frequently needed "bodies" for demonstration purposes.

Yep, it's hard to find a good therapist but they are definitely worth it when you do. I also had some nagging end-of-season spots, so I went last weekend for an hour of pain. Felt awesome the next day (racing) and no more of the sore spots. Instead I created some new sore spots... oh well...

The massage therapist I've worked with has told me it should not be painful to receive treatment. The guidance he gives is that it should feel like a 7/10 on the pain o meter.
I've found that 2 to 3 days after massage my legs are really good.
Massage is Definitely a good training tool, just don't let the MT leave bruises or beat you up too terribly.

I have been considering start working with a massage therapist, more then likely once race season gets going. Whats the going rate for a hour massage? I know the prices very but figured its worth getting an idea.

A woman does the massages right? I feel kinda awkward if another guy was rubbing my legs.

My friend is just starting out, doesn't have her own office, so the first hour is $20 to get you hooked, $30-50/hr sliding scale thereafter.
Even at $60/hr, I'd rather have 20 massages then buy a new group set.

yes please! have generally found that the guys have more strength whereas the ladies have more finesse and
accuracy. ideally, first 30 minutes of deep tissue massage with a guy to "break it all down" followed by 30 minutes
with a lady to get things back in order.

I'm currently off the bike with some alignment issues combined with some serious muscle tension problems and nerve compression. It's a chicken and egg argument as to which is causing (was caused by) which.
The deep tissue work hurts like a bastid but produces results a day later.
When I used to get regular weekly massages it didn't hurt nearly as much because problems didn't accumulate and didn't get to this point over the course of a week. Also, the therapist I went to got to know exactly what issues I had and how to quickly and effectively deal with the problems.
For bike racers regular massages are very useful. Money well spent.

A good friend is a massage therapist. Sometimes we trade that for fixing her computer. I haven't done deep tissue yet. Not sure I want to pay to have my ass kicked.
