Cross race medical coverage Q?

Hey, I'm helping out with the medical coverage at the cross race in RI this coming weekend. Have any of you guys needed something they didn't have? or things that you've seen needed a lot that i should not be without?

big cooler of ice is already on the list :)

thanks

yeah I needed a new r.der and a dropout straightener one time, they didn't have any handy.

but generally cross crashes I've seen and heard of have been pretty mild. Maybe a splint for fingers / arms / shoulders if you're a long drive from the ER. Bandages / ice / cleaning stuff.

Well i'm not going to lend any RD's so they will be SOL for that one. Splinting stuff i have, I'm guessing there will be an ambulance there also since it's a decently sized race. Also was thinking a few squirt bottles of water to have since i'm thinking this race might be muddy for cleaning up cuts etc.

MRI?

Seems they're always short of those at the cross races I've been to.

Skip the breathalyzer.

my xray vision specs are in the shop but i do have lots of ways to poke and prod people to find out what's messed up to some degree of accuracy :) don't worry this won't hurt me a bit.

Is it bad that the first thing I thought of when considering X-Ray vision and CX races was being able to say, 'Dude, your carbon frame is toast' with accuracy, rather than caring about personal injury?

i will not be saving any bikes.. at the most i will throw some AT tape around your bars if the electric tape is coming loose ;) AED's do not work on seized up BB's either

Jake,
What is your medical background? Sounds like you have no set plan if you "guess an ambulance is on site." Have you ever set up a medical station before?

Jakedatc 12-05-09 08:58 PM

I am an Athletic Trainer. I was not setting it up, i was assisting the Athletic trainer who has run it the past 6 years. I was mostly hunting for any little things people had specifically had a need for and didn't have. kind of a "oh i wish they had....." we had all the major stuff covered as any other game, practice or whatever.

Turned out to be a very easy day medically.. we only had one cut from a chainring that we cleaned up and bandaged up. Plenty of wipe outs on slippery corners though but no damage so that's good for the riders.

rainy, cold and muddy race for the riders.. better them than me.

Sweet! Thanks for helping out, I am sure the racers appreciated it. Sounds like a fun day of 'cross, uneventful is good in your profession.

Jakedatc 12-06-09 01:40 PM

Yep, we say that a boring day is a good day. We'd much rather just sit and watch a good game/race. I'd never seen a cross race before so it was fun to watch. Maybe i'll get a call again for next years.. i'd definitely go again
