Yeah, I read bits of that in the paper this morning. Cool stuff.

Anyone who can get here to give the Driveway a try sometime really should.

This is arguably the best weekly race series in the country (If they ever got some podium girls the argument would be over)...it's run with Swiss watch precision..the track is beyond smooth (and very safe) and it's cheap...20 bucks and you can race as much as your legs will let you. (If they ever got some podium girls the argument would be over)

EDR, what's your take on adding podium girls?

In all seriousness, I'm spending time working a little south of Houston this year, and I've thought about taking off at some point to do a Driveway race. I don't know if I can swing it, but it's at least on the radar screen. Anyone have a 54cm bike I can borrow for a night?

I was just kidding..seriously though this series is just awesome. The promoter, Andrew Willis, has such an attention to detail, really cares about the racers and makes the racing fun, safe and very challenging. The race course is an auto racing course (It's really not a great course for a car..a kart yes but a full size car it's a bit tight) that is perfect for racing a bike on. Great pavement, with curbing that is not to dramatic. Top it all off that it's 10min from downtown.

Lend a bike to a stranger to race, with the screen name "Fat Boy"?

*EDIT* Oh...I guess it's not so far fetched!

Andrew makes all the first timers take a clinic. Honestly this is one of the biggest things wrong with our "Cat" system. As a cat 5 you do 10 races and you are a cat 4...what have you learned in those 10 races racing against other inexperienced racers? We should all have to do a clinic before leaving cat 5.

Damn, it sucks that such a great series is hosted 1 hour north of me and I can't juggle the time to ever make it. You Austin peeps are lucky.

great article, would love to have similar stuff (clinics, etc) here in Colorado (why we don't is a little mind-boggling)

I wish there would be racing at the Veloway. I love that place! Never been to the Driveway, though...

There is TT near the Veloway. That snake crossing could be a problem :-) Driveway is better than the Veloway imho and only 20/25' away from there.

Me and some buddies do hot laps at the Veloway..that place is so technical it would be a crash fest of epic proportions if you held a race there.

I believe a race was in fact held there some years ago. I heard it was a crash-fest of epic proportions...

I've talked to guys who raced the Veloway Crit back in 1997 or so, and it was indeed a crash fest. They just did the front half, not the back stuff. There were a bunch of guys who "knew it like their own back yard." That may be true for solo riding, but shoulder to shoulder on that course would change everything.

I think the key would be to designate a team leader early and the other guys just string it out the whole time. The tight turns would constantly kill the back half of the field. That would be a pretty safe scenario... that you'd only see in the M40+ and p12. Everyone else is too selfish.

Yeah...I've over-cooked the left/right 90's at the end...too fast into the left, then completely lined up wrong for the right...almost into the trees. Can't imagine it under a race situation.

That's a great offer. If I can swing it some time this summer I'll give you a call. I could try the Mellow Johnny's route, but I'd probably blow the bottom bracket to pieces!
