Quite a splash.
The second one is a good song. Love the energy in the finale. Hadn't heard that one before.

Well, as a meh, that first one has broken Alanis Morissette’s ("You oughta know") record for the longest stay at the top of Billboard’s Alternative chart by a female singer (6 weeks now, and counting). Also the first woman at the top of that chart at all for 17 years (which is longer than she's been on the planet)..

side question: does music have to be "good" for you to enjoy listening to it?

that's nice and all but I don't follow the pop charts... I figure, if a song /artist is truly good, their music will stand the test of time and eventually I'll get around to listening... meanwhile there's plenty of great music that never hits the charts, or, great music from years past that's been forgotten.
TMonk: no, it doesn't have to be good to enjoy it. Look at Cake.

Cake is good. Simple, but good.
On a side note I really enjoy the new Katy Perry jam... And here's the catch: I enjoy it even if i'm not watching the music video!!!!! lololololllol

Yeah, Cake might be a bad example.
Nirvana might be an example of a band that sucks but stands the test of time though

But the straight answer is, no... I will shake my booty to the latest pop disco trash if I'm just out somewhere if it's playing.
However a lot of the modern Nash-pop crap just actively repels me. Sure the production quality may be top tier, catchy tune, smart lyrics but I just can't stand the whole genre, rubs me the wrong way. So for me a lot of musical enjoyment is contextual... I like Texas bands because they are Texas bands for example... I hate the Nash-pop sound regardless of who's playing it. No accounting for taste.

Opinions and ********, I guess.
their Unplugged album is one of my favorites. Nirvana's music is simple in construction, but powerful in execution. Everyone is free to not like it, for sure, but it's kind of like not liking abstract or pointillism painting styles I guess.

You mean the Katie Perry song that is a direct ripoff of that other girl's song?

There's another trend that annoys me, pop artists (or more accurately, their producers / labels) ripping off covers and never crediting the original artists and of course the (young) fans have no context to know that awesome beat with the catchy lyric is actually several decades old. Sigh. Get offa my lawn.
Going along with that there's the whole Robin Thicke/Marvin Gaye Blurred Lines fiasco too.

I have no problem with current artists sampling old tracks or breathing new life into a new song, but give some credit where credit is due.
I also found the whole Avicii - Levels/Flo Rida - Good Feeling rip off of Etta James thing a bit annoying last year as well. I have to admit, I didn't mind it when Avicii did it, he's a dj, he plays other people's music, I get it...but Flo Rida coming out with a song using the same sample a month later was a bit much.

Of course, I'm no expert -- I've owned about 8 albums in my life and only use headphones for netflix.

Moving this back to Music status...
tl;dr
That's way deeper than I get into music. I think if CDR was really really into music, he would write about 1/4 of that. Nirvana was mediocre to my ear in the beginning -- not hot or cold, then overplayed for several years, then quadruple overplayed for a decade after Kurt died. Now I just kind of enjoy hating it.

I'm 33. I bet you're 5-10 years older than I am?
For me, in 1993 I was 13. I couldn't have been more impressionable.

I guess that means my oldest (almost 12) is going to be glued to the stuff on the radio these days O_o record companies have way too much control still.

Very true. I'm 41. I don't look quite as fondly back on my middle school/high school music. NIN, Ministry, New Order, etc, all that was fine. Liked some of the hair band stuff too. Not much of it aged well. The Cult still gets me riled up, as does RHCP.

she needs to grow her hair back long and gain like 10-15lbs in all the right areas, esp her ass... then she'd be a 10/10.
not saying I wouldn't, or that I don't enjoy watching her new music videos...
