Lucky you.

Still trying to find her at a venue near me.

To my mind she is the best thing in a long time. I like to imagine she is the love child of Elvis Costello and Chrissie Hynde. Genius stuff.

found this delightful jam two days ago, always love when these guys join up:

I've been a MMW fan for quite a while, and this video makes me realize how seriously indebted John Medeski is to Herbie Hancock. I've always heard it, but man, his solo is screamin' Herbie!!

I saw today the trailer from the movie "Miles Ahead" and am so excited to see it in April. I love Miles's music.

Every now and then some hipster at work plays something from some cute little indie band that I actually really like, like this one:

This dude has been getting a lot of play on Jazz88. I think this one is pleasant:

My teammates and I have started a new weekly playlist on Spotify. Someone selects a theme for the week, then each of gets to add three songs. The added challenge is that we are trying to avoid adding any song to any playlist twice.

This week's playlist theme was "Power Songs" - songs that will get you motivated to ride hard. (We have our annual team trip to the mountains starting on Thursday, so the list was intended to help with that ride.)

My three selections were Danzig's Mother, Blur's Song 2 and Outkast's BOB. Some folks went for more inspirational songs. I focused solely on options that make me want to crash through a brick wall.

Just picked up a new interest from Jazz88, really digging this:

Cool cerebral melody, interesting solos and tons of percussive effects, the latter not being a surprise as the frontman is a vibes player. I will be checking out a lot more of his stuff in the coming weeks.

I've always been a Cal Tjader guy myself, who has a decidedly latin style:

My youngest is taking a writing course with a musical theme. He elected to write about his take-away from a selection from a book that talks about the influence (impulse) of gospel, blues, and jazz in the music of Miles Davis, James Brown, and Jimi Hendrix and how stereotyping them does them a disservice.

Playing Side 1 of "A Tribute to Jack Johnson" (mentioned in his reading) right now, or is that "Right Off"?

John M's guitar is so awesome on this.

sweet.

I saw John McLaughlin play at my college in '08 or '09. He was healthy, in good shape, and the concert was good. He still had that dark, slightly evil style - it was great.

Last time I saw him was around 1980 with Larry Coryell as the warm-up and he was solo. Larry was great, but John was deep into his Mahavishnu (did I spell that right?) Orchestra phase and it was awful. I walked out because it was so bad.

But, damn, his playing with Miles is some of the best ever.

Now going to play *****es Brew off my ancient vinyl from end to end to solidify the musical concepts in my son while he writes his first draft.

He did tell me that listening to the music mentioned in his reading assignment helped a lot in understanding it. I am sure that he has heard all of this before, but now he is listening with a different appreciation.

Nice, and agreed on the miles comments. This one has always been one of my favorite tracks, in no small part because of John's prolific noodling:

Also, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin is pretty hit or miss for me, but mostly "miss". I do like some things off Birds of Fire, however.

Birds of Fire is an album that I totally hated when it came out. I was in college at that time and was trying hard to educate some of my friends about modern jazz. It destroyed everything I was trying to do. They loved it for all the wrong reasons. I hate that album.

Not much later Stanley Clarke and Herbie Hancock from the jazz side did it better taking in rock and Jeff Beck (Wired) from the rock side taking in jazz from the rock side as well. Of course they were many years past Miles doing it, but Miles was a genius.

Heavy Weather is a great album. Love it. I have a first release vinyl copy that sounds awesome.

Last night I saw Courtney B on SNL when channel surfing. Like I have said on the 33 before that I think she is awesome. Why is it taking so long for her to get her due? She should be a superstar by now.

This is a real Tmonk style track here:

I dig the Beatles as songwriters and Brad Melhdau in general.
