Team signings, Rider movement

We'll be seeing lots of rider movement at the end of this season. The end of sponsorships, the merging of teams, and the ProTour will shake things up quite a bit. Thought it might be nice to have a central spot for this sort of thing.

I swear I read that Maggie Backstedt signed to Liquigas for next season. But now, I can't find the news article. Anyone have info?

from cyclingnews today:

Celestino quits Saeco
Italian classics specialist Mirko Celestino has decided to leave the Saeco nest, signing a deal with former Polti team director Gianluigi Stanga. Celestino will join the ranks of a team formed from the merger of De Nardi and Domina Vacanze. The two teams are expected to combine assets with an eye on securing entry in the UCI's Pro Tour for 2005.

Paulinho to Liberty Seguros
Olympic silver medallist in the men's road race, Sergio Paulinho, has signed a deal to join Manolo Saiz and the Spanish Liberty Seguros team. Paulinho, who rides this year for LA Pecol, will also be joined by Portuguese compatriot Nuno Ribeiro.

Celestino moving to the DeNardi/Domina merger is interesting. I suspect that it is so that Celestino will not have to ride in DiLuca's very large shadow in the Classics and the traditional Italian one day races, the latter which Celestino really shines in. I also suspect he got a pay raise in the move, so good for Mirko. This gives that team a solid classics rider who is very consistent. Haven't been to his website yet, so we'll probably know more when he puts something up there. Mirko's got style , class, and charisma, so I wish him well.

Paulinho's move was expected. He is the real deal, and should show well in the future.

Backstedt is moving to Liquigas for their return to cycling sponsorship. This is Rebellin's old outfit and should be a good solid team for Magnus.

And I believe Merckx has signed with the new permutation of Lotto and the parent company of Davitomn(sic).
