I'm willing to bet that there are far more races in NY than California, just because they're not on some calendar doesn't mean they don't exist. In the city alone you can race 5 days a week without even getting in your car.

California may have the most, but this state is also MUCH larger than most others. There is a road race somewhere in the state almost every weekend of the season, but considering that driving from the northern-most point in CA to the southern-most can take about 12 hours, it may be a bit of a hike to get to.

I think you are reading that wrong..that's bike races including crits..I can tell you TX has far more actual RR's than Cali does.

I'd also posit that the 10 races I'll do this season in CT are a lot closer to my house than S.F. is to L.A.

Just looking at that Calender, it misses 2/3rds of the races in florida. I would bet it's at least as inaccurate for a number of other states.

Washington State has a decent amount, there have been races at least every weekend since March, a few Sat/Sunday combos but not enough.. OBRA (Oregon) does seem to have more/better races, and is known to be "harder" (hillier?) than WSBA. Few weekday training races but they don't count..

Our road season starts kinda late (March) and ends kinda early (September), due to weather obviously, I get jealous of the "early bird" crits in CA/TX/FL...

Until there is a good RR & Crit every weekend within 100 miles from my house, there isnt enough races even in SoCal

That being said, Fiesta Island Thursday is a great crit riding not too far from my house and local club rides are pretty good too.

I believe there are 2-3 road races a year within 100 miles of my house. I look forward to one late season road race because it is "only" 160 miles away. My car gets a lot of miles on it during race season.

IMO, the OBRA oregon races are lustworthy , if I had a car I'd be down there quite a bit.
There are a lot of them, they are challenging, they have some really good down-town crits, and the organization seems to run rather well.

Washington actually does have quite a few road races, but they are mostly/all stacked between mid-March and late-May. (pretty much doubles every weekend, all within a 4ish hour drive of seattle)
After that we have crits till August, then a few circuit races...
All in all, it is a good balance, even if not as heavy on RRs as I might personally like.

Here in North Carolina, I've got about two dozen races on my calendar for the rest of the year, all within a two hour drive. And those are just the races I've targeted. I could probably double that number, especially if I could get out of work for the Tuesday evening crits.

When I lived in West Texas, there were maybe 2 to 3 races per year within 300 miles.

The other side of the field is always greener. We have a lot of road races in OBRAland, but I wish we had more crits. That said, in May I can pretty much race five days a week if I want (I race track as well as road), and in June, there is a race every weekday afternoon (three road and two track) and usually at least one road or track race on the weekends too. And if you are into mountain biking as well as road and track, there is literally a race every single day of the month in June and July.

Does OBRA have USAC (or at least WSBA) reciprocity now? (I think at one point OBRA races "didn't count" for us, or something?)

Eh, circuit races actually. I guess I said that wrong; I meant "road" as in the discipline, IOW: "not track". PIR Monday and Tuesday and Tabor on Wednesday in May.

It looks like most OBRA races don't count for WSBA points. I found this on the WSBA category upgrade page:

Only races permitted by USA Cycling or foreign races permitted
by a UCI affiliated National Federation will count for upgrading
(1D1).
This means that results from events without USA Cycling permits—
such as races at Pacific Raceways, Seward Park on Thursday nights,
and (with minuscule exceptions) in Oregon—may not be used for
points toward a category upgrade.

I think the 'miniscule exceptions' are a couple of the big stage races.

One thing this thread has made me think about though is that I'll drive 2 hours to Corvallis for a road race without thinking twice, but it never even occurs to me to drive an hour and a half up to Olympia... Maybe next year I'll get up north a bit.

I am fairly certain there is some sort of reciprocity arrangement between OBRA and USAC. I don't know the details. I guess the minute I need a USAC license to race up in WA or something, I'll find out. OBRA3, if he is lurking around here, can comment on this much better than I can.

John, we have 2 road races within 60 miles, another within 100, 3 crits within 10, and 4 more crits within 100 miles. That's not too bad, but of course we would have a lot more if we were actually in either norcal or socal.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Carson is working on setting up a stage race here next year as part of CycleMAYnia. It's too bad the Ventura Stage Race didn't happen this year, I understand it was a date conflict with the city. Maybe it will be back again next year.
