2004 Vuelta a Espana
Gonzalez, Heras, Sevilla, Vino, etc. are some of the favorites.
It will be interesting to see what Beloki and Hamilton will do. Is Joseba's year a complete wash?
Riders I'm keeping an eye on: Cioni, Zubeldia, Menchov (!), Jaksche and Tonkov.

If his back is healed, this race belongs to Tyler. I know he didn't have this on his schedule but I think he is ready. He's rested, his TT is "on form" (as Phil would say), there is a lot of climbing, and his team is awesome. Cunego has said he's pulling out after two weeks to get ready for the Worlds, Sevilla and Heras can't hang any more anyways. If anyone has a chance of beating him it is Vino.

How do we know that Heras can't hang in there any more? Cause he had a bad TDF? I'd put Tyler down as an outside favorite. He didn't even sound too confident about himself.

It's so difficult to call this race. Right now I'm picking Vino, with Hamilton and Valverde sharing the podium (in which places, I'm not sure).

Cunego's said that he's only doing a week and then retiring to prepare for the worlds.
Valvarde's in fine fine form. Overall wins at the Tour de Valence, Tour de Murcie and Tour de Burgos.

Disappointed to hear about Cunego. Thought he'd have the climbing skill to make some hay. If I were him, I'd try for a second grand tour and make 2004 his year. 22 years old too. Sheesh.

Not in the USA, extomesm. Not unless you have some special Spanish package with DirecTV. Sorry.
I'm wondering if Cunego is high enough in the GC (ie, leading) that he'd stay for the whole Vuelta. The only reason I didn't mention him in my pick is because he said he's staying for two weeks, tops. I would absolutely love to see him win the Vuelta. His explosive climbing style is absolutely DESIGNED for the Vuelta. He could nullify the flat TTs in the mountains.
Hope it happens.

I would bet on Valverde
Hamilton is a big question mark... maybe if he is healed up and on form he could take the whole thing.
Like Devil said, it would be really cool to see Cunego go for it all. Maybe he will take it easy on some days and pick a stage or two to win on a mountaintop 'sprint'.
