Will Dave Z's Skinsuit Remain Legal?

It forms a fairing between his upper arms and chest/lats area. It looks like he's wearing a few sizes small but I think this is by design. The sides become a smooth and flat area below his armpits. Looks like an aero advantage to me.

I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

Hard to find pics. It was easier to see in the video broadcast.

It wasn't legal last year.

Ok, how about these:

if it's anything like the skinsuit that he, and danielson, had last year, then they're giving the UCI the middle finger.

photo is by ed rader.

more likely to ding the guys who stuff camelbacks down the front or back of their suits.

bdcheung 05-23-10 09:11 AM

It's not. No tube fairings on Zabriskie's skinsuit.

Racer Ex 05-23-10 10:27 AM

If you're talking about the one where he's out of the saddle, it's the suit stretching and if anything makes him slower.

El Diablo Rojo 05-23-10 10:36 AM

Perhaps is some sort of marketing ploy...Red Bull gives you Wings...POM gives you Fairings...

hammy56 05-23-10 11:02 AM

I noticed...it was noticeable when he was leaving the start.

ZeCanon 05-23-10 11:12 AM

More noticeable when he's on the bullhorns: http://velonews.competitor.com/files...11-610x927.jpg

Maybe he just has really short arms.

Racer Ex 05-23-10 11:27 AM

Most of these suits are paint-ons and designed to ride in the aero position. Mine feels horrible in anything other than that.

This is what I'm talking about. Member longbeachgary uploaded a bunch of shots to photobucket. Compare Dave's suit to the others.

If that isn't by design, it is a terrible fit. I have several different skinsuits and they don't do that. Even the ones that are too small.

mzeffex 05-23-10 07:49 PM

Either way it looks stupid. I think it's fit.

mattm 05-23-10 07:53 PM

Gonna have to say "217" on this one..

Wouldn't it help if it did the fairing thing behind the arms, but stuck to the chest in front? On the horns, it's pretty clearly screwing things up, but if there was a side shot of him in the bars, I'm thinking that it would fare his arms pretty effectively, and those frontal shots in the bars look fine to me.

It might, but I think it would be contingent on how much air was passing between his arm/shoulders/helmet. That air needs an escape route, otherwise it's going to slow him down. The "fairing" could smooth the flow in that area or it could "cow catcher" air trying to pass through.

WR saved it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm just thinking of the two vertical cylinders (upper arm) and how crappy the aerodynamics are with that shape. Blend it through with a non-fluttering tense fabric on the triceps, and it could help. My thinking is that he's been in a tunnel with that suit. Of course, he's a complete goofball too, so it could be lots of things.

I've been thinking about some inflatable calf implants for fairings.

Oh, and I guess the verb would be "fair," not "fare." Looks weird to me, but most things do.

plenty of things about cycling might look stupid, thats beside the point...as far as fit, I think Garmin and Z might have half an idea what theyre doing.

Dubbayoo 05-24-10 10:43 AM

He does have some seriously narrow shoulders, works out well for him.

sounddevisor 05-24-10 02:30 PM

Looks like the tension across the chest might also help in maintaining the "elbows-together" aero position? Sort of like having a big rubber band around both arms.
