Most of us train by TIME and INTENSITY not distance.
Keep intensifying it, don't stagnate (15lb).

Jump ahead of the competition.
Depends where you want to be at really, your drive & if you have the balls to train even harder.

The only applicable use for training with weights is for touring. This isn't the touring forum.

Can we just stop this now? This argument has been done before, no need to do it again. umd is right, but sick will never back down and going through the whole argument again is just a waste.

A 15lb bike is the road to stagnate (speed/power) remain constant. Think about it.
The OP mention will turn pro soon enough, if hes dedicated.

This, of course, doesn't really apply to anyone training for racing which is what this subforum is for.

if you have more resistance it ill take more power to go the same speed, you fail at simple, basic physics.
many of your posts center on some silly concept of mind over matter, this is not what is being discussed when training and/or intervals.

I honestly felt bad for this guy who has been training for about a year to complete this timed event we have here. Last year he didn't finish. This year he was determined to finish. But he trained awkwardly. He added weight to his bike, used ankle weights while even on the trainer, added lead weights to his shoes, did tons of things to his bike, and constantly rode the same route over and over. He had a reason for everything he did that seemed off-the-wall.
In the end, he didn't finish the event - again.
Nothing beats a structured plan using power or even heart rate and/or perceived effort.
I commute with a huge pack to take things back and forth. The only thing I really accomplish is to hurt my knees sometimes going over the mountain midway through my commute.

The lack of common sense here is unreal. Your body can/will only exert so much effort. The only variable with the weight of the bike is distance traveled.
i.e. you can push the pedals just as hard on a 'light' bike as you can a heavy one.

you're ridiculous, if someone can push 1000 watts for 10 mins... adding a crapton of weights on his bike isn't going to make him suddenly do 1200 watts for 10 mins. in fact, that's the dumbest thing suggested today.

Agreed. At best, it would increase your long effort endurance, by developing the slow twitch muscles, whereas explosive power and sprint ability needed in racing requires the development of fast twitch muscles.
sickening, you are not correct in your information, although I can understand why you might think it's accurate.

How are earth are you a mod. Seriously.
WR, little help here?
Your output, power the pedals, does not change just because your bike is heavier. You just go slower. So yes, over the same distance you will do more work (ie it will take more time). But you are not working any harder. You are just riding longer. So you could just ride longer on your 15 lb bike.
If you took the number of hours on the bike you did during your camping trip and did them on a 15 lb bike, you would be just as strong.
