Late evening (it's still Sunday night for me) thoughts about stage 8: Chavanel burning out so soon was a surprise? Not really. Shleck and Evans have a good plan - stay on the wheel of Contador as he and his team thrash themselves in an attempt to catch them. Contador showed weakness. I'm doubtful Astana can bury themselves day after day like they did today.

Will LA bury himself to try and help Leipheimer drop those ahead of him?

LA can still win if he pulls a Landis '06 stage 17 solo flier.

Asked whether the team would now ride for Leipheimer, who is up to eighth overall, 2:14 down on Evans, Horner said, “Who?"

1) Armstrong is 4 minutes further back,

2) Landis had at least as good of form as his rivals, Armstrong doesn't,

3) Everyone has seen that play now. Even down 12 minutes, Astana et al, would mark Armstrong a bit closer than they did Landis.

Armstrong's better play is lose more time, get a longer leash, then attack for a stage win, or to be up the road to help Leipheimer.

for some reason i'm a samu sanchez fan, he looked pretty good yesterday. lots of uphills left in this TdF though, i think all we can really glean from yesterday is that a schleck has some good form, the contenders are pretty much who everyone thought they would be, and that father time doesnt show favorites, he smiles on us all.

I'm really not sure that's 'a play.' I think that happens no matter what he actually tries to strategize.

Seemed like a rookie mistake. Sad, like seeing Willie Mays fall down in center field or, like Ex said, Holmes slapping Ali around.

Kidd, Chavenal was never going to be a GC contender, he got his glory and may get more and I'm sure he can party like a rock star after the race is over.

Lance rides for Euskatel? Because the crash that took him out was his own fault. The third one probably made him lose 11:30 instead of 11:00 but it's not like that extra 30 seconds is going to keep him off the podium.

Lloyd might be right about the Basques not riding a straight line, but linking that to Armstrong is an impressive bit of mental gymnastics.

He didn't exactly say that. He said they wouldn't all ride at the front for 8th, which would be the proper answer no matter who the guy was. It's like asking Euskaltel to set the pace at the front to protect Sanchez if a GC competitor goes up the road. He knows that the duty falls to BMC or Saxo or Astana to do the work right now.

He did say they would protect Levi.

I don't really get it. I read the quote a few times, and still don't get it. Explain please? To me it sounds like he's dissing Levi, but that can't be true.

At the bottom:

Asked whether the team would now ride for Leipheimer, who is up to eighth overall, 2:14 down on Evans, Horner said, “I don’t think we ride for seventh or eighth. Do we look after him? Sure, absolutely, we always have. But do we put guys in the front for eighth place on GC? I don’t think so. We’ll just have to make a plan B or a plan Z.”
Just sounds like he said they wont work to control the peleton while Levi is in 8th place.

They have a strong GC team and a strong rider in Levi. They could easily get a good finish. What else are they going to do?

In other news, Cadel hasn't smacked any journalists in his stint in yellow yet:

(I like Cadel, but it's a great excuse to show this video again)

i interpret that to say, levi, you're on your own. remember 2007 when you worked for AC by following him around France, do that again. the rest of us are going stage hunting with bbox
