My question: I've been doing Women's Cat 4 races only this year. The previous two years I did some Women's open fields but those were an exercise in frustration. I only managed to hold on to the field in one of the Open fields, and that's because there were 9 of us and everyone was taking it easy because there was a major race the next day.
This year, NJ split the Crit Championships into two days - one for Masters. Well, the person in charge of the Masters Crit Championship has decided to lump the Women, Men 55+ and Men 65+ into a single field, and throw in some non Masters championship races. I've never raced with the men before. My team is talking about boycotting in entirely. I'm not sure if I should try it or not. My team captain has me scared to race with men (that's how she broke her arm). After that race, I have two more crits left in my season and both are Women's Open fields. So I'm wondering if I should try to race with the older men, or take another weekend to work on hard intervals.

I remember saying something about the fact that Masters 55+ and 65+ won't bounce back from injury as well as 25 year olds, so they tend to be more cautious. Plus they don't have an excess of the take stupid risks hormone like younger guys. But then this is a state championship race, so that may induce some risk behaviour.
Is this your "A" race for the rest of the season? If so, try to convince your team to go. Otherwise, it might not be worth it to make waves.

Re slowing in the group: If it's safe, move over slightly out of the draft and into the wind to bleed off speed. A smooth veer is safer and more efficient than braking.

Is there any published or common sense guidance on blowing up gracefully (ie coming off a group in such a way as not to gap the guys behind you)?
When I'm not totally nuked I try to accelerate and pull to the left (can't always accelerate).

another thing you could do is to make sure you rim/brake gets dirty. mine (swissstop black) got to that point a week back, and would screech like a banshee when i just tapped it lightly. that ought to alert everyone

At the very least give people behind you warning before you blow. And if you can, give every last ounce of energy you have to close up the gap for the rider behind after signalling. Basically, give the signal to pull through, stay where you are to shelter the rider coming up, then if you can pull over and up alongside the rider ahead, then make sure you are clear of anyone around, and ease off the power.

I'll put up my hand and just pull off, at the same speed I was going. Just don't do anything too abruptly. If you're falling off the pack, you probably don' t have many people behind you, and those folks are probably on their way out anyway. Closing your gap is going to hurt them no matter what you do.

garmin 500 owners.....I've approximated my pathetically low FTP and I'm trying to enter it into the garmin so it will calculate %s and zones.
I'm having trouble with this. I followed the directions in the manual (i couldn't find any other areas to add FTP)
bike settings -> bike 1 -> power zones ->
but at that screen I hit buttons and nothing happens. ideas?

Ok so I've heard of "41" and "33" so what is that? Also, what's the point, per se, of this thread? If it's not for racing then wouldn't all the questions fall under the Road Cycling forum?

The numbers come from the URL: e.g. "bikeforums/forumdisplay.php?41-Road-Cycling". Before the forum software upgrade, there didn't used to be the "-Road-Cycling" tacked on the end, and it still isn't necessary.
