I read all of the Hesse books way back in the late 1960's/early 1970's. I didn't particularly care for any of them even though I was "supposed" to like them. Shrug.
I did the same for Kafka (also widely popular in certain circles way back then) with a different result: Loved them all. Read Dave Egger's "Zeitoun" recently and kept thinking back to "The Trial" the whole time and was calling the protagonist "Herr Z" in my head as I read it.

Yeah, it took me a bit to get into.. Dune was the same way, it took me something like 2 years to read the first 100 pages, then 2 days to read the rest of it.

Reading Baker's "House of Holes" just to read what all the brouhaha is about. It is almost as funny as "Pale Fire", but certainly not for the prudish.
I put "Bento's Sketchbook" on my wife's Amazon wish list becuase I wanted it and it unexpectantly arrived today. Her birthday is at the end of the month and perhaps one of her relatives bought it ... for me! SCORE!

Read this one night:
And this the next:
The Missus only had those two, and she picked them up where I work (someone drops off books for my boss to read). Now I have to see if the book person brought any more.

I have bought this book many times. I lend it out and it usually doesn't ever come back. My hope is that it gets lent out again and again to be read by people that I don't compete against.
One time it came back with a HUGE bottle of Duvel. Too bad the guy that borrowed it was more of a "feed the hungry" than "eat off the other guy's plate" racer. Reading it didn't "cure" him.

^ Im looking forward to reading it...
and thats how I feel about 'dog in a hat'. Ive lent it out a few times. For me so far, its the book that explains what racing is about (to me), the experience.

I finished reading Bento's Sketchbook a few days ago. I kept looking for more pages to read.
I scoured the house for something to engage my mind and happened upon a large collection of Nabokov short stories that I bought on remainder many years ago and only got 2/3rds the way though. What a bonus!
Nabokov should never be thought of as that "dirty old man that wrote Lolita" even though that is his public perception in the US in the general population that might even know his name. "Lolita" is an awesome book and to me not "dirty" at all. He also wrote "Ada" and "Pale Fire" (my personal favorites) along with a huge body of work that is first rate.
Not bad for a non-native speaker.

If it's brilliant your first time, then wait until your tenth.
It gets better each read.
I take it off the shelf once a year, or so.
Usually on vacation where I can devour it in one sitting.
We could have a thread just to discuss the nuances of The Rider.

agreed.
No doubt, just like I do with 'a dog in a hat', it will be revisited occasionally.
I made the mistake of starting to read it at the studio the other day, and was annoyed when people were coming in to spend money. I didnt want to put it down.
