Help with upgrade
Hello, I need help figuring out what to upgrade on my bike. I have been to numerous bike shops that all have different opinions on what should be upgraded first. I currently have a specialized Tarmac with 105 and and an Ultegra 6500 rear derailleur. I have Spinergy Stealth FCC wheels. I race juniors so I have to have gear restrictions, so things like Rotor Q-rings are out of the question. I have looked at the Dura-Ace 7900 crank, Rotor 3D crank and the Easton EC90 crank. I also don't know if I should upgrade the crank first. Please reply with your comments.
Thanks

My honest opinion. If you have to ask what you should upgrade, then you shouldn't upgrade anything. Ride what you have until something wears out, breaks, or bothers you. For example, rims hitting the brake pads when you sprint? Maybe you want to look at stiffer wheels. Brakes not working well for you on descents, look into new pads. So on and so forth.

The bike you are riding can win races.
When you are finishing top 5 consistently, we can talk about upgrades.

save your money for gasoline, race entry fees, and maintaining what you have until things break.
now, ask the mods to close this thread before someone fills your head with stupid ideas.

Fwiw, I raced a caad9 with 105 for a while and did okay on it in the 4's. Few podiums and all that jazz. You have a good setup going. Keep the money for later. Seriously!

Speaking from experience, worrying about upgrading really isn't worth it for juniors just getting started in the sport. Last year I was so obsessed with upgrading my bike. I had this grand image of having a really nice bike would suddenly make me really fast. Well some stuff happened and I ended up with a really nice bike. I love my bike, but it certainly doesn't make me a better rider.

If you have some money you want to spend, get a power meter.
$300 on a used power meter will be a lot more valuable than a new Dura Ace crank.
That said, you can do quite well without either.

buy rollers for the winter, and ride more, don't worry about your bike, unless its about to break. I just got thrashed during a crit on my shiny carbon trek 5500 which is full DA, by a guy on a 20+ year old steel bike with downtube shifters. Just get out and ride. And remember that anything you bring to a race you have to be ready to replace. Wouldnt you hate to drop $2500 on a new pair of carbon tubular zipps then crash on your 2nd race with them and be out $1300 for a new wheel?
