Trial race?

Can I attend just 1 crit race and see how I like it? Do I need to purchase a license and all that, or can I just show up and do it there and pay a 1 day/race fee?

you can usually find a cat5 or citizen's category and purchase a one-day license.

There are also training and practice races in many areas. And some places have races that are set up for teaching new riders how to race safely. I.e. https://www.velopromo.com/ebcr-ent.htm

One might argue this is a pretty good way to get involved in racing. The training crit that I attend in my area is a very mild course which anyone who can handle a bike should be able to handle and the mood is usually light and non-intimidating. Typically not a bad way to see if its something you want to get involved in.

That said, i just dove into the first race I thought was close enough, got my ass handed to me and came back next year much more prepared. I think most people can identify with that.

Some cities have a Beginner Criterium Class which covers rules, etiquette, and basic techniques. Maybe ask around or keep an eye out for one.

Most weekly races are considered "training" crits with the "real" races being events with prizes, points, and officials.

Just show up with a bike, helmet, and money for the fee. You'll know soon enough whether you like it or not.

You can't buy a one day as a Cat 5 for the State Championship races in Florida. I'm guessing that is same same elsewhere.

Also make sure that your jersey has sleeves.

And it is a real "no-no" to show up in WC rainbow stripes, any country's champion jersey, pro team kit jersey, etc. The worst that can happen is that they will ask you to take it off. If they don't, lots of people will laugh at you behind your back. On second thought, maybe that is worse.

In TN you can buy the one=day license and race the State Championships, but you do not get your medal if you podium. That goes to in-state, annual license holders only.
