First race, got to learn about neutral wheels

Yep, ten miles into the first lap out of three at the Banana Belt in portland, got a flat, wheel car came by fifteen minutes later and he gave me an Aksium race wheel. I finished the second lap solo, then when I reached the finish, the rest of the Cat 5's were 7 minutes behind me/ 23 minutes ahead of me, so I just stopped and watched the finish.

I volunteered in the morning and got free registration, and I got good some good experience. I'm going back next week.

^ might have been supporting more than one category, might have had to stop to help another rider.

Realistically, anyway a spare in the wheel truck is basically there so you don't have to ride back to the car on a flat. Without teammates to help and team cars to sneak a draft off, you're very unlikely to get back on, even if the wheel truck is there in 15 seconds.

truth - any amount of time is tough to make back.
I've even closed 60" of 75", and even though the pack was in sight, I couldn't close up the last 15"... it broke my spirit pretty badly to get that close and not finish it.

Good work volunteering - the community needs more people like you.

Probably got dropped on the hill 5 miles in and used the wheel car from field coming up from behind. I was in the Cat 3 version of that race in the morning.

I one time made it back to the field, not once, but twice after two consecutive flats. Went off road, picked up some thorns in my tires. Rear went flat, stopped, got a spare, teammate came back to help me get back up. Made it back up to the wheel car on a slowly leaking front tire (the tire was mostly flat when I pulled up to the driver side window), got another wheel, and chased back on on my own.

...

For the rest of the story, it turns out chasing back on from two flats really kills the legs. I got dropped about 20 minutes after I got back on during a really fast downwind section of the race.

Yeah this is what happened, the pack was already about a hundred yards ahead of me when I got the flat, and the wheel car was supporting the two other groups behind me.

Any wheel van story prompts me to post this:

I'm still hoping to meet the guy who got the tow.

Well, I finished this time, still way in the back, me and several others got dropped at the first hard hill. I was ahead of most of those who dropped, I never passed anybody or got passed for the rest of the race, atleast it was a good rain ride
