Splitting a payout?
Hi guys,
So it has been my understanding that teammates working together to put a guy, or guys, on the podium generally split the winnings.
But my question is, what happens when one teammate ends up on the podium, but another teammate provided little or no assistance?
For example, if one guy is out front pushing the pace and ends up on the podium while another guy is struggling to hang in with the field, it seems to me that the second guy does not deserve any of the winnings. But would teammate protocol dictate the winnings be shared?
Thanks.

If you win the tour de france, then you should split the winnings whether the team mate helped you or not. In our races, there isn't really a set protocol.
Personally I probably wouldn't share winnings with the guy unless it was sort of a team policy to do so. But, if I had several team mates some of which helped and some didn't, I would split the winnings with all of them just for being there. Most often winnings are merchadise, which is hard to split.

many of the races I do give out ill fitting extra thick T-shirts as prizes (i'm looking at you velopromo). I guess I could give my teammates the sleeves. They could use them as some sort of arm warmer and I could keep the shirt as awkward sleeveless muscle shirt

This should be well established BEFORE you guys start racing together. Even subsets within the team are OK.
Even though I am the company owner, and president of the club and it's teams - I am not even privy to the private splits our elite riders take out. I don't want to know and I don't want any part of it. I have just told them all that if anyone feels like they ate a big crap sandwich because of a split or how something worked out then I'll be upset so they better handle it the right way.
In general though the idea I believe at least 2 of my teams are following is this: You're in or you're out and you tell everyone BEFORE the race. When you're in you're working. If you're in the move then it's up to you to get as much money at the end as you can. If you're not in the move it's up to you to block or counter if the move is brought back. If you have a move that a teammate is in and it stays then if there are paying spots left it is your job to be in the pay in the final field sprint.
If all the pay is up the road and you don't have a teammate in there then it's your job to destroy yourself bringing the break back.
Here's the kicker -- if there is a teammate that is not "in" that day who is up the road - they're considered fair game and they know it.
After the race you self asses. "Do you deserve your cut?" If you don't think you did anything to help deserve your cut even if you were in for the day then you owe it to the crew to say you're out of the split. They of course will bring you back in and pay you out anyway....because it's a team and everyone has a bad day.
If you continually want your cut but you aren't in fact doing your share then eventually you will be out. Off the team entirely.
OK - sounds harsh but these particular subsets of my teams take it pretty seriously and include multi year state and National champions. When one of them has more pro riders on speed dial than you have relatives on yours then...you tend to say, "Oh...OK. I understand. Thanks for informing me. Sir." Instead of, "Well.....I don't know about that....."
That said there is a ton of people out to have fun and they race in another subset. In that subset I kind of run things and I would never begrudge someone their overstock size Small wool socks and their powerbar or $25 check that will bounce.

We split the money evenly. Anyone can have a bad day, so we won't hold that against you. If you have a bunch of bad days we may talk to you.

We split the pot evenly every race. No questions asked. However, it is perfectly acceptable to decline a payout if you don't feel you deserve it for some reason.

Indeed..
My team is so awesome; last year one of our 3's got 2nd in a RR, and with the $40 or so he won he took us all out to Subway after the race.. I didn't deserve it one bit, since I was a 4 anyway.. which is why my team is so rad!

We decide beforehand and split the winnings, which we usually end up donating to the junior program. Except for TT winnings, because aero kit is expensive.

Last year I generally raced with just one teammate, although I got a bunch of help on a couple days from a lot of teammates. For various reasons the money ended up split up only once, i.e. the others declined it.
In other races where that one teammate (who's a good friend) or I got money, we've kept whatever we got, even though we both worked for one another in one way or another. Usually the money is less important since it's not that significant an amount.
Plus other things end up more significant. For example, I've helped my teammate out with fit, significant parts (carbon aero tubular wheelset w/brand new tires, my newest carbon 10s Ergo levers), and general racing advice. He's helped me in other ways, primarily demonstrating to me that I need to htfu, giving me a sounding board for stuff, and generally being supportive of me off the bike.

Cash is split evenly with teammates on my team. If you were fill or didn't contribute then it is at your discretion to turn down the cash or accept it.

Yeah, being on RX's team, there's no question: the guys with the cash are buying burritos or cashing out. You keep your prizes, but the money belongs to the team. Well, we give prizes to each other based on needs and interest too. I carry a pocket knife that my main training partner won in a prime. Of course, we were in a 2-man break off the front, and it was his turn to pull at the line...
We had a youngster win money last year, and I told him to keep my cut after I lead him out. Teenagers will appreciate the cash much more than me. He offered though, right after the results were final.

If the guy(s) led me out for the sprint or totally sacrificed himself to chase down a breakaway so I could get on the podium, then I'd give him (or them) a share of the winnings and buy a round of beer for them afterwards.
If it's mechandise or a medal, then it's a little harder to split, but the beer still applies.
For the guys hanging off the back, I woulnd't give them anything since they didn't contribute to the win.
As others have said, this works out best of that's all agreed upon before the race.
