pfft. that was more of a love tap, if you ask me.

Are there any longer videos (they always seem to be 'teasers')? Great production value and good racing.

Here's one of the (then) US elite crit champ. The guys in the Red/Black kits are his teammates (all Cat 1s). Good example of small sphere, staying calm, working the pack:

Here is a full race version we got from last year. https://vimeo.com/47386280 I find most people don't have the patience for longer videos, which is why they usually end us as "teasers." That and the fact that I usually don't have time to work on these. Might be a good watch if you're stuck on rollers for an hour.

huh, I guess they flipped the course for Tour of Austin. That last climb before the finish is pretty steep.

The Driveway changes course every week. They have full course, mid-length course, stuff only on the east end, and stuff only on the west end, and they run everything both directions. You totally get to where you see one of the courses and immediately recall how those races often go (breaks, no breaks, long sprint, short sprint, difficult to pass in the last 300m, etc.)

I wish we had something like that around here (that I could go to weekly). Sup, Laguna Seca... (such a brutal course, though!)

I wish I could apply to UT Austin for grad school, but the chem e department is super competitive, and the mat e department doesn't offer PhD's. I really want to go to that school... Maybe if I apply to the chem e department, and get a dual adviser from the mat e phd program...... long shot, anyway..

Get after it! If you like to avoid competition, you're in the wrong sport...

we'll see. I already have a list of 8 schools. not enough alignment in research interest, as much as I'd like to live there. . .

Rouge-Roubaix 2013

This video and report of the P/1/2 race is the best I've seen. It gives a very good idea of what this particular race is like. The rider is a Cat 1 out of Birmingham, AL. Even if you'll never do the race, it's cool to watch.

As far as schooling goes, there's some interesting information in Gladwell's new book about success rates of super competitive schools vs. what would be considered less competitive schools.

Synopsis is that the failure rate at the former is really high compared to the latter, and the end product isn't much different.

Yeah, we just got the book. Really interesting stuff, makes a lot of sense too.

When I came to TX for my job, I went to a boiler room type of software consulting company. Rewarded taking huge risks, very competitive culture, charged hourly rates comparable to some expensive law firms -- for coders. They bought talent at about 40% more than the industry norm. I rolled through some really challenging interview questions and enjoyed the process, got the big offer, and thought I was going to be the hammer. Then I show up and there are all these graduate-level beasts from MIT, CMU, Stanford, Harvard, etc. on my team. Small fish big pond. I had to re-jigger my motivation on that one to be successful.

"We're really just here for the beer."

If you're in Austin during DST, find your way here on a Thursday night. We'll find you a bike.
