Damn. Sorry to hear this. NC got off pretty easy, sounds like things aren't going quite as well elsewhere. Hope all is well for everyone.

According to update, the dam isn't breaking, it's just that there's an 8-10ft waterfall cresting over the top into a super narrow valley.

Just got back from recon drive. Lots o flooding, roads shut down. Briefly caught between a washed out bridge and a mudslide, but was able to clear a path with some other people and then directed traffic until a cop showed up.

Rode around for 1.5 hours. Leaves and branches on the roads, few big trees down, some across roads -- navigated through the hanging/sideways branches -- one down on a nice house, another just grazing the corner gutter and just missing another house. Some of these trees had huge trunks. From what I saw, folks were quick to cut up large limbs. One road I was on has tons of pine trees; it smelled like a Christmas tree the whole way. We definitely came through pretty lucky around here. Well wishes to others!!! I read online about the dams in western MA, scary stuff. Good luck gsb. Big John, being a former collegiate sprinter, I approve of your post

Installed the first two modifications to my car. Cro-Moly rear motor mount and a short shift plate. Both from James Barone Racing. The motor mount is extremely stiff, and makes it feel like a race car, lots of vibes at idle and especially around 2k RPM. Not bad at higher speed, but noisier than stock. Not sure if I like that for a daily driver. I'll see how it goes. The short shift plate is pretty nice indeed. Get to keep your stock shifter height, but make the throws shorter.

I heard the governor of CT on TV just now saying how in a similar storm in the 1930's there were 600+ deaths in his state because there was no media like today. People were swimming in LI Sound as the hurricane approached. Today people are prepared, only one or two deaths reported in CT. We should all be thrilled that the media can now be blamed for over-hype instead of praised for accurate disaster prediction.
We did dodge the bullet with this storm, could have been much worse. The original predictions were for a stronger storm which would have been devastating, and while I'm a HTFU NYer being so to the point that you ignore real threats is silly.

Got that right. Hurricane parties take irony to a whole new level of douchébaggerie. Btw, do you live on the high rises by the river or are you on the cliffs?

I don't want to jinx things but the water receded just as it was about to breech my house. I moved the entire contents of my basement into the main part of the house. It's literally impossible to move anywhere. It seems that as long as the power stays on we should be good. I'm not sure what happens with the oil slick the hazmat team contained in front of my house. I guess tomorrow is move stuff back to the basement day. I hurt and I'm sleepy.

I heard that if Hurricane Irene was a cat3, it'd chase all of it's teammates down and then blame everyone else for it's screw-ups.

Good luck gsteinb. Hope the worst of it is past.

My dog killed me a rat today. Well, mauled it and left it for dead so I had to finish it off. Good dog, good sausage dog.

Phew. Get some rest.

Government is in a no-win situation in these things. If the sheet doesn't hit the fan then they are a bunch of idiots, if it does then they are responsible for cleaning up the mess and not warning people ENOUGH. I was a first/emergency responder for years and unless you die in a burning building or drown trying to save some kid you're considered just some lazy fark with a pension and some job security.
