Crit etiquette question...
I am pretty new to racing- just started this year and I've done 3 crits and 3 TT events in my local series. I've been learning a lot. My biggest lesson- don't hang out in the back of the pack! During my last race I had some trouble clipping in and there was a wicked 40 mph headwind in the first turn around the track so I fell behind early. I ended up chasing as hard as I could the entire time and did end up passing all of the riders that popped off from the lead group. With about 10 minutes to go I caught one of these riders and asked if he wanted to help chase so we could get closer to or catch the main group. He said he was too burned out to help chase and then he stayed on my wheel for the final 10 minutes of the race. Just as we were about to cross the finish line he sped up around me to take one measly point after I had worked my butt off to pull him around the track...was this cool?

no, that was not cool, but that is bike racing.
In the future, do no work for or with this guy.
Also, in the future, if somebody is incapable of working, then they serve no useful purpose to you. You might as well try to drop them so they don't ***** you at the end like this guy did.
If you were leading the race, I'd say you were a sucker for dragging him around like that. But when you're OTB, his move is just bad character.

Some people don't mind if you suck their wheel. I know I've done my share..but I've said loudly...I'm done, I've got nothing! And they said, just recover and try to help..whatever.
But I don't sprint past them or make an effort for the finish..that is just asshattery IMO.
But, that is racing also. If you don't want someone sucking your wheel, ride them off of it, or just sit up and move over and make them pull.

IMO it's a ****** move only if there was nothing at stake, i.e. sprinting for 22nd place, but you said he got a "point". If there is something at stake, it's not a ****** move, it's a sucker move, and you got suckered. Keep learning.
A rider that is truly fried and not lying through their teeth will not be able to respond to attacks. You need to be the aggressor. Make sure there is lots of space around you, then jump hard while swinging off to the upwind side, then cut back hard to the opposite side. This should shake him. If it doesn't, do it again. Then again. And again. Caution. This is a dangerous move. Make sure you are well clear of the field.

It's a cat 5 race and you were OTB, so I am with shovel on this. Nothing was at stake, and therefore it just becomes a training ride.
The other rider was probably in the same situation as far as experience goes. If it was his third race, then he may be just as full of questions about this as you are. I'd not be all that quick to judge in this case.
