How Irene will/can/does/did affect the 33

Add as you see fit:

1) Cancelled race(s). Higher emotional impact than scenes of millions of dollars of devastation/disruption

2) Causes TT nerds to book time in a high speed wind tunnel and revise spreadsheet to include 70 MPH winds

3) Made Botto seem almost sympathetic (love you man)

4) Makes Texas racers gloat about the weather (sure, it's 128 today, but at least trees aren't flying through the air)

5) Shovel wins race and nicknames himself "Hurricane"

6) Grumpy stays Grumpy

7) Racer Ex revises ignore list

8) G's basement missing trainer for first time since 1979.

It's going to do wonders for my previously nonexistant love life. My gf and I are going to go watch the storm at a beach. Woot.

Passed North FL in time for a clear race day, leaving 100 degree heat and a 20 knot wind straight out of hell.

windy and hot! The tailwind part was awesome, that headwind part sucked really bad though!

I loved it when the cops radar gunned us going 34+ with the tailwind.

A lot of non-training happening around here. This is part of my one hour flat loop. It's also my third alternate route home. It took me 40 minutes to get the 3 miles from home to work.

Even in my pathetic current race shape I really wanted to do Nocatee. Flat and windy suits me to a tee being a person with an enormous "cottage of wattage". Instead I was dancing with Irene up north.

Sunday morning most of the carpeting in our motel room was wet with water seeping in. And my Monday morning flight from Philly was cancelled. Other than that it was a piece of cake. Others were not so lucky.

I borrowed it from the Courant. The state police shooting range is down there (they have an annual SWAT team competition there), ditto the one private shooting club in town. It's interesting to ride past the private club when the weather is good and they're shooting all sorts of stuff. But right now... yeah, no riding there.

Wed I'll be hanging out around here. We're finally getting our gutters put up, I have to get to the shop to try on kit stuff for 2012, and it's a pain driving around here due to all the flooded/closed roads. My 3 mile commute took me 40 and 57 minutes on Tuesday and Monday. I hope Thursday is a bit quicker.

Got the generator going to run the fridge and charge phone & batteries. Every place is sold out on the plugs to wire into the water pump, so still working with buckets of water for flushing & gallon jugs for drinking. Got some parts coming from on-line supply store, then will get my neighbor to help me with the wiring. Roughing it for a week. Showers are over-rated.
Not too bad compared to all the poor souls who've had their houses & businesses washed away.

Let us know how funny it is when it's your turn.
Not so funny if you're the one who's house or business washed away or had a family member drown in the flood.

"... Maybe Hurricane Irene wasn’t overhyped after all: the storm is likely to rank among the 10 costliest catastrophes in U.S. history, according to The New York Times, with a pricetag of $7 billion to $10 billion. Flooding caused much of that damage, which means it won’t be covered by most insurance policies. Insurance companies normally cover half a storm’s costs but in this case they may cover less than 40 percent... "

How much cleaning up could a thread on a natural disaster require?

FWIW I didn't/don't. Lost a home and virtually everything I owned to a fire when I was 18. Still have physical scars from that. Fought wildfires (saved one home), worked in the Oakland fire (walking past smoldering cars where people had lost their lives), and went to work every day a block from where they were pulling bodies out of the 880 freeway when it collapsed. Had a friend decapitated by a shark and lost numerous friends to racing and diving accidents. List is longer but those are just starters.

My coping mechanism is gallows humor. Think Life of Brian.

What I've come away with is you can replace stuff. Losing a home sucks. But you can move on from that. You can't replace people or other loved creatures.

While I was running from rubble pile to rubble pile shutting off water services to try to get some pressure to the dry hydrants in the Oakland fire I got flagged down by a couple who asked me to turn their water back on. I guess I gave them a WTF look because the lady looked at me and said "we found our cat".

It had taken shelter in a hollow under a concrete driveway and somehow survived. Whiskers signed and looking worse for wear. Here were these two people standing in a pile of charcoal (literally...the fire was so hot that it melted the aluminum wheels and engines out of cars) that was once their home and they were shedding tears of happiness and relief over a cat.

I turned the water on for them, got them a scoop I had that they could use as a water dish and got back to work.
