Wrong. 7-Eleven became Motorola between the 1990-1991 seasons. Sciandri was still with Carrera through to the end of 91.

He signed with Motorola for the 1992 season.

After she retired from the 7-Eleven women's team, Cindy Olivarri had been speaking to teenagers about the dangers of drug abuse in sports. Bicycle Guide had it as a cover story, probably in the early to mid 90's.

He must have raced for 7-11 before Carrera then. I know that he beat a bunch of the 7-11 guys at the criterium in Brentwood, California. He was racing by himself or on a local team and really turned some heads. It was a bigmoney race, but there weren't any Euro teams there. I could be wrong. The race was part of a series of $10,000 criteriums that used to happen in the states.

Inga Thompson lives on a ranch in Baker City Oregon near the Wallowa mountains, settled in. She sure came up fast when she picked up racing in 83 or 84. I have some professional video of the 84 and 85 Coors Classic, a lot of the folks mentioned are on them, including Chris Carmichael winning the Morgul-Bismark in 84, good stuff. 84 Alexi Grewal got thrown off the Coors for failing a drug test, almost missed the Olympics because of it.

I think their bikes were made by Ben Serotta regardless of what the stickers on the downtube said. i.e. Huffy.

You are right, can you imagine how painful it must have been for Serrotta to see that logo on his art? At the time they were pretty cool bikes, they were made for the USA olympic team, which is the reason for the Huffy ****, they bought the rights to supply the bikes for LA olympics.

He COULD have not done it...I mean it's not like Huffy was holding his family hostage demanding that Serotta build them bikes...
I suspect he was paid quite well for the effort...and it's still being talked about... :D

Hee Hee, I guess that it was that or just let Huffy build the bikes! The thought of that would have been worse that having the family held hostage. :eek:

By the time 7-11 went to the TdF, they were riding Eddie Merkx bicycles. I saw an old film from the TTT that year with almost the entire team crashing at once.

Davis Phinney was with the 7-11 team and rode a Serotta-built frame when he became the first American to win a stage of the Tour de France in 1986.

It also brings to mind an old story of when I first meet Ron Haymond. He would come on down to Seattle to ride around Lake Washington with my roommate Mark Pringle. I would tag along and after a hot ride one day he opened a quart of ice cream and poured a couple of beers over it. We stood in shock, he looked as us wondering what the hell was wrong and said " beer floats, great eh ! "

About the 7 Eleven time trial bikes, they first used the profile Huffy's in '87. Prior to that the team used Murray branded bikes and no profile bikes. The profile bikes were actually made by Huffy in a top secret facility known as the "skunk works" where they were hand produced by Glen Morton (I think that was his name). Serotta produced both the Murray bicycles as well as the Huffy bicycles from the period of 1983-1988. The bikes from 84-85 have the LA olympic logo on the headbadge and were solid red. The 86 bikes were a red white fade with a plain M on the headbadge. And we all know that Andy's bike in '88 was a Landshark.

I'm lovin' this thread. I've been a fan of cycling since 86', and the 7 Eleven riders were the first of my heros alongside Sean Kelly in his KAS days. I was particularly a fan of Davis Phinney. It was a joy to watch the team evolve over the years into Motorola, then Postal, and now Discovery. It burns me when all of the new school cycling critics and cynics, the bandwagon jumpers who discovered cycling in 2003 when Lance was going for number 5 and just want to make a name for themselves by citing "expert" doping allegations, are oblivious to this long and great history of the team. 7 Eleven was a novelty back in its first days in the European peleton until they started to make waves with Andy Hampstien, and now the red and green machines great-grandchildren, the Discovery boys, are a force to be reckoned with.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories. Let the losers at L'equipe dig up their pointless drug scandels. I'm gonna do what a real cycling fan does; dig out the old issues of "Winning", dust 'em off, and remenisce over pictures of Jeff Pierce winning on the Champs Elysees, Hampstein on the Gavia in a blizzard, and Phinney showing us all what American cycling is all about.

Slurpees and "Huffys" forever!
