I'm still kicking myself for flaking out and not meeting up with a friend for a ride back around '92-'93.

My friend, after getting tired of waiting for me, starts his ride in central park, and runs into Phil A. they did a lap, or two, togther. Apparently he was super cool.

Just bought my 1st pro-replica jersey since 1990. Since I missed out on the descente 7-eleven replicas, i decided to get myself a giordana motorola replica

7-11 History - courtesy Davis Phinney

I found some fabulous 7-11 stories from Davis Phinney - one online in a story at cyclingnew.com - see http://cyclingnews.com/road/2004/tou...p?id=davis0403 , but the most entertaining version is a podcast from competitorradio.com - he tells the story of how 7-11 rider Alex Stieda became the dirst North American (he is Canadian) ever in the Yellow Jersey, without ever winning a stage!! He also tells some good Bob Roll stories... Well worth the listen - go to http://www.competitorradio.com/ then to ARCHIVES, and search for "Cycling" - there are lots and lots of interviews (over many years) with Lance, Bob Roll, Davis Phinney and many more. The podcast with the 7-11 history that is so entertaining is titled "Davis Phinney III"...

    Enjoy!!!

Here, for the OP, some old team posters.

Note Lemond on the Coors squad, and Armstrong on the Subaru poster.

They had a team in 82 and I believe in 81 also. I raced against them in 82 in an early season pro-am race in St. Paul MI. They had ten guys on their team, they placed 1-10! I rode for Yellow Jersey out of Madison, WI and my team got 11th through 14th (I got 12th). It very humbling how easily they could control the race.

To this day I hate the "Slurpees". They just sucked up all the prize money wherever they went.

Normally I'm opposed to digging up old threads .... but this brings back a lot of memories similar to those already mentioned from the other old timers here.

I was fortunate to meet a number of the 7 Eleven guys the first year Hampsten was on the team when they were present for the opening of a Wheels in Motion bike shop in Dallas. I got autographed cards from Hampsten, and my two young sons used to keep them on their nightstands next to their beds the way some kids displayed baseball cards.

The team raced in a criterium at the State Fair of Texas in October of, oh, 1984 or 1985. The course took them through a parking lot and on the sidewalk in front of the Cotton Bowl. To get over the curb in front of the stadium, asphalt was packed down to construct a makeshift "ramp". Everytime the pack went by, a couple of guys would rush out with brooms to sweep up the scattered clumps of asphalt, and try to repack the ramp. Ron Kiefel won, but I kept hearing people in the crowd ask "Where's Eric Heiden?" as he was the only guy most non-cyclists knew by name. Heiden wasn't there that day.
Jeff Bradley used to speed skate with Tillford when they were juniors (so I heard). Makes sense since Tillford seems to do every sport!

Speed skating & cycling are very compatible sports .... from muscle usage to mindset. I started skating and riding my bike around the neighborhood when I was a kid. They both appealed to me in similar ways.

    Off topic a little.

I took second place to Bob Roll at a TNW (Thurs night local road race) in the 80s. I was 16 at the time.

I have a framed team 7-11 t-shirt in my fit studio. Still looks brand new!

I saw the 1987 Tour de France peloton with the 7-Eleven squad roaring through Karlsruhe since I lived in that town until I was 18.
I can still remember the spot I was standing at. I was amazed how blazing fast the whole spectating was over.

Yeah, "holy old thread, Batman." Ah well.....anyway, it's a bit of a bummer that Bauer has taken those pics off his site.
And what ever happened to waltergodefoot?

Anyway, I can't believe I didn't post this picture on this thread, coz I posted it just about everywhere else.

    Hi,

I'm surprised that I didn't post some obscure relationships that I have with some 7-11 riders.

First, I raced as a junior with Doug Shapiro on Long Island. Of course racing with him means starting a race at the same time. I ran into him years after he retired and I think he remembered me. After all, there weren't many Chinese-Americans racing bicycles during the 1970s.

Second, I worked with and was friends with a guy, who is still in the bike business, who grew up with and raced with Chris Carmichael.

Third, I am friends with and participate in training sessions led by Roger Young, who is Jim Ochowicz's brother-in-law (Sheila Young's brother).

Oh, and I really like Coca-Cola Slurpees.
    Thanks.

Some names I haven't heard in a long time...

In my memory of fast riders, 2 come to mind that were head and shoulders above the rest while I was chasing them. The first was a wee lad of 16-17 in the back farm roads of Madison, Wisconsin. I was just into the senior ranks as an 18 year old and young Tommy Matush left us for dead. He was on junior gearing and smashed the tt time of everyone who rode that day. Only G. Lemond would have caught him...he was minutes ahead of second place. Sad that he never chose to race on to the Euro level, but he was an inspiration nonetheless. Next only a few years later when I had moved to SoCal was a bullet quick guy with endless endurance named John Brady. I worked with John for a brief spell and foolishly thought I could hang on rides with him. Then he went and won the La Jolla Grand Prix in something like '87. Worth mentioning, but not a 7-11 guy was of course Wayne Stetina who blistered the lakefront course I grew up racing on to become national champ in 1985 for the second time. He beat some 7-11 folks that day handily. Still the greatest Shimano parts guy ever!!!

Once got a hand-sling from Frankie in a local training Crit. After I yelled at him.

Ok I just found this thread so I may have missed this if anyone posted these names as original members who were also 7-11 employees:
    Christopher Liu
    Don Wintz
    Steve Robles
    Bob Hefner (rip)

I'll post some old pictures when I can dig them out. BTW - I'm married to one of the above!

This thread...back from the dead...I just had to mention, I just found a pic of "handy" Andy Hampsten all decked out in his team 7-11 kit riding in a race with Greg Lemond right behind him...nothing unusual about that except that Andy is riding a team Raleigh Bicycle....mmmm..any chance team 7-11 rode Raleighs back in the day to try out for a couple weeks...or was it some wierd contractual thing for Andy?
