If I just want a version that just works and i'm not looking for new features or cutting edge developments...do I download this new version or stick with what I've got?

What error box, the extra black command line window thing? It's still there.

You can install the stable v2.1 and the v3 development build at the same time. When I uninstalled the last v3 development build and installed the newer one, everything remained intact.
