Got the points! Should I Cat up to 3?

First of all, wooooooooohooooooo!
Got enough points to upgrade from Cat 4 to Cat 3, if my math and the rule book are both correct!

5 to 3 season with only a few races as a 4 though. Hence my questioning. I did good on mixed Cat 3/4 races and won a big one and placed 2nd and 4th on a couple others, including 2nd on a large field crit. This weekend I needed 3 points and got 5th on a 50+ Cat3/4 RR (5 points). That's about all my experience...

I can sprint, I can climb, I can handle my bike and want to get away from some of the 4s, I race smart and have been strong - how humble, no? But I also know I lack racing experience in terms of breaking away and tactics on longer races.

I know many will say I should race more as a 4, but I feel that I am more likely to get that experience by going ahead and upgrading.

Also, another good result would put me into mandatory upgrade I guess.

Anyway, comments please. Thx!

Which guys, sandbaggers? Not quite, but flattering nevertheless!
USAC server seems to be down. Is this a sign?

The guys who are like "I don't want to upgrade until I achieve [meaningless goal X]." Where that goal might be winning the local crit series or BAR competition in their category, or just gaining some non-specific amount of "experience". Not necessarily sandbaggers, though that typically comes with the territory, but the ones who want to keep playing in a small pond for prizes no one cares about rather than stepping up to bigger and better challenges.

Just upgrade, the 3s aren't much different. It allows you to get the experience of racing faster, and sometimes with the P12 crowd. The Cat4 fields are too crowded as it is.

i always explain the difference between 3 and 4 as distribution.

the fastest 3s and fastest 4s are pretty similar, but an average 3 is like a top 10 finisher 4.

Crap, I'm one of those guys. I don't think it's that unreasonable, though, waiting until the end of the season to see how the race series I'm participating in play out.

Me too. In fact, I asked one guy why he hadn't catted up yet and he said he wanted to try to win the Cat 5 State RR Championship first - he didn't.

Anyway, OP, yes, cat up. It is well worth it.

I had the exact same conversation with a guy regarding the State crit championships. I tried to explain to him the Alex McDonalds' that always seem to exist in Cat 5. Even if it is just for a little while, another shows up to take his place.

He didn't finish top 10.

There's always something to learn at every level. It comes down to learning it amongst your current peers or your true peers. One has to be hinest with themselves.

OP, good move. You got your win. Time to move on.

I have no issue with guys hanging back in a category that are in serious contention to win BAR points or a jersey, just upgrade immediately afterwards.
