Ft. Davis had some 20% stuff on their hill climb. People were walking up and they rode 6 miles before.

Got rid of my VW a couple of weeks ago and decided to sell the racks I had for it... a cheapo performance 2 bike hitch rack and a nice set of thule aeroblade crossbars with two peloton bike mounts. Put an ad on CL, talked to a couple of people, one lady had the same car and made me an offer for the roof rack. Sent her a bunch of pictures of it on the car, with bikes, without bikes, laying in pieces in my garage. We agreed on a price, told her to meet me at a local wal mart after work and it was good.

I showed up yesterday and found her car in the parking lot. A guy gets out and was polite enough but I noticed a woman still sitting in the car. Figured whatever... started showing him the rack in the back of my truck and he's happy. Then he says "We need to talk about the price." I told him I had already agreed on a price with the woman who had contacted me originally. "Yeah, she didn't know what she was making an offer on. We found out that we can get a completely new rack for $250 more."

I told him sorry, but selling price had already been settled. She knew full well what she was buying. I wasn't rude or short with him but he could tell I was getting pissed at that point. Told him that it wasn't going to happen and proceeded to drive away.

I hate people that do that. Usually though since they already made the effort to meet you they will agree to your price even if you stay firm. Surprised he let you drive away. Guess he really didn't want the stuff that much.

Was trying to sell some camera gear and pretty much in the same situation. Guy kept looking at it for like 45 minutes...and then proceeded to low ball me after we've already agreed on a price via emails.

It is. I've had much better luck as a buyer than a seller. If you're buying something and just show up with the cash, people are sometimes surprised.

I had to walk up the final section of Mt. Diablo the first time I did it. I think that's 17%. 20+ is just insane. How do they even pave it?

I looove the steep stuff. Steeper the better. I take vacations from flat Texas to hilly places and seek out the big steep hills.

Gearing. Comes in handy. 39x23 won't help you much on a sustained steep grade.
39x29, better. I can get up just about anything with that, if it's dry / paved and I'm not suffering from empty legs.

In the rain, after 200k+? NFW... bring me a triple and one of those giant bailout cassettes.

I tried to low ball a person out of a power tap wheel set on craigslist yesterday. Got within 50 bucks.

The Devil's Elbow. Sucks after 11+mi of climbing. EDIT: When my buddy (same as below) was training for a fg Death Ride, we went out to do Mt. Diablo repeats. I was riding 48x18 (15t cog on the flip for spinning back down) and made it up the Elbow the first time. Made it 1/2 way up the second time and had to walk the rest.

I did Dalewood last week after some hill repeats. It was not a smart idea. 22-27% for most of it. 14.8% average including the 'flat' bits at the beginning. My riding partner (who is usually faster/strong than I am) had to walk the last 1/3 of it. I think he hit the first section a bit too hard and popped.

This thread makes me want to go do some hills. There's a couple sections by me that peak at 20% but they are more of a stair step with cross street running every block giving you a slight rest. I can't imagine doing some of those climbs

A Mtn in Tempe, AZ according to strava is 21%. Kicks to over 30% in the first section. Our cycling team had a small TT every semester before exams. That ***** hurts in a serious way. It's hard to get out of the saddle and pull on the bars without lifting the front wheel up.

Roy St by the Arboretum is 27% for one block, with the surrounding blocks at >20%. I've done it once, it wasn't fun. Good strength work though.

I did it in the big ring a few times (53x25).

SLOWLY.

Maybe 20 rpm or so lol.

My legs ache just reading that. Why would you do something like that given the choice? I've done some 15-20% climbs on my fg (49x18) at those sort of rpms and it sucks.
