Yes with the car incident, but watching her go from high honors, to honors, to C and flunking math is not so good. "Conversation" today was "Go Away"

Our response was she couldn't get her driver's license until they got back to A's.
She got over it, and is now on pace to graduate with a double major from Florida State, Summa *** Laude.
It's worrisome, but I bet your daughter will come around.

I got caught taking one of my parents' cars on a couple of occasions... they were pissed but asked me what would stop me from doing it again. "My own car." was my answer. "When you pay for it." was their response.
I turned 35 last weekend and my mom asked me whether I want to have kids of my own someday. "When you pay for it." was my response.

My left arm is still pretty banged up from last months tumble. While I'm no longer totally one-handed, I can't use it for much. For instance, I can't get out of the saddle...hell, I can't make a right hand turn in our minivan while only using my left hand.
Pretty stupid to race on Sunday, right?

I've been thinking about front / rear weight distribution. Seems like mostly the recommendation I've heard is 55/45 R/F.
So I put my bikes on the scale and measured mine out at between 40/60 and 30/70, depending on how I sit.

Well, I really don't think it's either of those. I can't see anyone getting hurt out of it...if I did, the decision to not race would be an easy one. My real issue is that I won't be able to get out of the saddle to accelerate. Sprinting is just not going to happen, regardless. So where does that leave me? Well, just hanging around in the pack and phoning it in. The truth is that I'll miss whatever breaks happen because I won't have the acceleration to make them. I'd like to race, but I think discretion being the better part of valor and all that crap...

An ex-gf's son took her car out without her permission (he was underage). He barrel rolled it at about 90 mph. All 4 kids got ejected but somehow didn't die or even get really seriously injured. They actually walked to someone's house and tried to figure out how to move the car but someone found it and called police. Police gave mom a choice:
1. No ticket, no record. This also means no car insurance so the car is just gone, like it got zapped and disappeared.
2. Car is stolen, grand theft auto or whatever (it was in Canuck land), son is a juvie for a few years, but they get $15k or whatever it was insurance for the car.
The mom chose #1.
I don't know how the son turned out, nor, for that matter, the mom.

If you're not collected $50k a month to race your bike then what's the point of doing one extra race in 2013? Will you regret it in 2015 or 2020 or 2030? Will you look back in 20 years and say, "Man, if I only did that race in Jan 2013 my whole racing life would have changed"?
If so then go race. If not then skip the race.

That's another thing I won't miss about my boss who got fired Friday, his stupid meetings. Almost always the same old tired crap, or if it started out different it would eventually end up with the same old tired crap. He would puff himself up and yell at us and threaten and rant like some clueless idiot.
Instead of hiring a replacement they have decided to let the parts manager run parts and service. He seems reasonable and has jumped right on the issues I have raised. Also, he speaks to us like we are men and not like a 4 year old who just crapped his pants.

Well it's fun, right? That's why I race, because it's fun. If I couldn't race I probably wouldn't ride, I'd get into karts or competitive shooting or some other "technology, practice, refine, tactics" kind of thing.
I get people asking me all sorts of questions along those lines, of "hey, what do you think, my cast just came off a few hours ago, you think I should do the 4 race today? I brought my bike and stuff just in case." Or "I had a major concussion yesterday and I wanted to race today but I can't really see right."
Seriously?
My mom said something one day after a car pulled out directly in front of her and cut her off. There was no one behind her so if the car waited just a few seconds it would have had an open road. She said that if someone in a plane was watching the incident it would look ridiculous, someone cutting off someone else with no one else around, no reason to do it.
Likewise, in the scheme of life, bike racing is pretty unimportant. To push forward and race despite serious injuries seems to me a bit excessive. Someone in an overwatch position, watching over someone's 80 year lifespan, might look at a decision to get in a race while still injured as being ridiculous.
I've raced while bandaged from road rash but when I have more significant injuries that affected my ability to ride I've stayed off my bike. It's just not worth it.
Of course I'm risk averse anyway. So maybe I'm too conservative.

I ride when I am sick and sometimes it makes the sickness worse or prolongs it. Stupid, yes, but the feeling is that if I stay off the bike that weekend I will lose fitness and have even more trouble hanging on to an already faster group. Stupid? Yes.

There are so many levels of "sick" that training while not 100% well could be anything from conservative to stupid. Listen to your body. Go by RPE. If it's hurting more than it should, if you are coughing up lungs full of junk, then maybe a few days off are the better choice. The whole loss of fitness thing is such a red herring. If one has a good base, it takes weeks to lose fitness. One can easily lose fitness by overtraining as well.

My new red Quarq no longer works with the Zero 7.
Crankset was creaking, so I went to tighten it. Any torque at all and the crank was binding, like too much load on the bearings.
Turns out that the spider of the Quarq was dragging on the BB shell.
I knew when I bought the bike that there was an issue with some BB shells. However, Quarq tested it on the Zero 7 before I bought it, and it worked fine for 6 months and about 1500 miles.
Now it can't be tightened to anything approaching spec, without binding. The shop is trying to come up with a work around, but at this point I'm fairly frustrated.
