Tough call... as I'm not sure if they'll let me migrate my mobile# anyway.

I may end up going back to a flip phone. My wife has an iphone and uses it quite a bit but when I had a smartphone, I just never really got sucked into it's usefulness aside from work. Nothing like getting emails 24/7:(

Tasker turns off crap like that when/where I wish. My phone annoys me maybe once every few months.

The call center at my old place of employment had a chair graveyard; 15-20 broken chairs sitting on the side of the building. Some of the ladies that worked there are close to 400 lbs.

Junk food is the new heroin. One of my in laws just went on diabetes meds and her attitude is they will enable her to eat junk food again. Its really an epidemic and I can blame people who fall victim to it. It was hard enough for me to drop 20 lbs, I can't imagine having to lose over 100.

Let me know if you decide to go this route in the near future. I'd buy it off you!

Would be a ton of fun to ride with I'm sure.

Not when you crash into a tree and crack a rib. But I only did that once.

I would be more with you if "health" wasn't used as an excuse for withering hate and social shaming directed at fat people. There's no question that obesity rates are correlated with various diseases and general markers of poor health, but this has been taken somehow as an excuse to be cruel to people. Given that, for a lot of people, losing weight, i.e. attaining a more socially-acceptable body size is simply not possible without procedures that carry a substantial risk themselves, I fully support body-acceptance and health at any size advocates. The key phrase there is "got healthy." Even a really fat person can develop (and may already have developed, for all the haters know) habits and a lifestyle that improves their health. It may not result in a body that isn't fat, but you know, so what? The obesity problem isn't going to go away by shaming the fat people onto treadmills and into gastric bypass surgery. It's a bigger picture than that. Everyone just thinks that the solution to the health problems that obese people are more likely to face is to lose weight. But health is way more complicated than that. Weight and health just aren't that well-aligned.

And frankly, the idea that fat people don't deserve to be comfortable is really insidious and widespread and, if you think about it, pretty despicable. What exactly does refusing to let someone have a comfortable chair at work accomplish?

Some of you know I porked up over the summer as a result of some meds my doctors put me on. I cracked the scales at 219 in July, which was unbelievably scary to me. Between my day job and my night job teaching commitments, I didn't really have much free time to do much about it until the beginning of November, but since then I've dropped 12 pounds and am on my way back towards being healthy.

The one thing I've found is that I'm unable to lose weight if I can't get plenty of sleep. This past semester I spent two 15 hour days back to back on campus every week due to my part-time teaching commitment, and those two days ruined my sleep enough that no amount of dieting could help me lose weight. However, the weight has been coming off very quickly since the classes ended on November 13th.

The leptin / insulin resistance / cortisol response feedback mechanism in our bodies is interesting. Unfortunately, some people fall into a trap and can't break out of it, then you couple the diet industry trying to serve their own best interests and well....

Yeah, I'm a fatty trying to become less so and those times when I'm stressing or not sleeping (and those two go hand in hand for me) my weight doesn't drop even if I manage to stick with my diet (hard because sleep deprivation/stress make me hungry as a mother ****er).

I think I was unclear. The chairs are for across from my manager's desk, not assigned to anyone specific. And I am not bothered that she got chairs which are more accommodating to anyone, I just wish I were better able to help the people who are the impetus for them.

I heard second hand that you were not riding much and some mention of medical issues.

Glad to hear you are back in (or should that be on) the saddle again.

The only difference is that it's acceptable to have an intervention for someone with tracks up their arms, but not for someone who's eating themselves to death.

On the other hand I was in the bathroom today and 2 guys were talking about one guy's health problems, and he was saying he wasn't sure what to do b/c they weren't getting better and there wasn't anything to do about them. Except they are all things that are linked to being overweight, and this dude is about as wide as he is tall. If you're sticking your head in the sand that's hard for me to be sympathetic to. If you know you have a problem and just can't make it happen, well, we all have our vices.

I don't know that I would go so far as to say that I am regularly riding right now.

History has shown that I suffer from an inverted U profile with regards to success with weight loss, exercise intensity and duration. This probably goes back to all of the hormonal interactions that a high training load causes me, in addition to my normal elevated stress levels.

So instead of riding a lot, I am aiming for the left upward slope of the curve until this gets fixed, which for me equates to between five and six hours a week. I have it broken down as six aerobic workouts a week, and two weight training days. I am running for my cardio four of those days (45-70 minutes) and doing very easy spins of no more than 90 minutes (usually closer to 75) the other two days. My weight training is done as 3 sets of a circuit with minimal rest, then I finish that with a run. You're welcome to join me at GHFC this Wednesday at 6:30 AM for a weight workout followed up by a 7 mile run ;).

As for the medical stuff, let's just say the combination of riding fifteen hours a week, teaching a semester long class, and running the IT shop for the largest college in our u. made me a little tired, and then getting the flu mid-term plus a certain unfunded mandate that caused me some stress in April really screwed my body up. My GP prescribed some bad juju that made it worse. If you want the full details to clear up anything in the rumor mill, send me an email.

But the weight loss has been running about 2 pounds a week, so I figure I will be fighting this battle until sometime in March to get back to my racing weight. It didn't come on over night, it won't go off overnight. I probably won't switch to riding as my primary cardio until I am close to that weight, and I won't ramp up the hours for quite awhile.. But I should still be able to be on a few of the hipp rides after the time change, and the running shoes will be easier to pack when I fly to St. Thomas next week.

Sounds like Pete Cannell. He coached a couple guys I know here.

don't know the details of his case, but i read the link. 2 things stood out from this one paragraph:
"He has accepted a two-year suspension beginning on May 17, 2010, the day he accepted a provisional suspension. USADA said Cannell also acknowledged his previous use of an anabolic agent, and therefore all of Cannell’s competitive results will be disqualified since February 6, 2007."

1) it was published in april 2011, so it seems not so uncommon for these doping guys to get tested but have a long lag before it is announced to the public.

2) while being an amateur old guy (i'm this, too!) doper (i'm not this!) is pathetic (i might be pathetic), at least the dude owned up to PRIOR usage and wiped out those results. if you're busted, own it.
