When my son gets home, I won't know how to explain this kind of thing. He's very sensitive to even small injustices.
I really don't know yet if we know any of the victims, but there's a chance.

Hey, let's stick a camera in the face of an 8 year old who just had her school shot up and interview her on national TV.

It takes 1-2 weeks to acclimate to altitude. Then 1-2 weeks to regain the fitness you lost while riding slow because you can't get enough oxygen.
So in within a month you should be set.

3-6 weeks. Depending on your physiology the power loss from sea level is going to be 5-15% after you stabilize. First few days are OK then you fall into a pit for a few days. After that you regain some of the losses.

I go back and forth from altitude multiple times a year.

There are a few good papers out there on adaptation.

I was going to go out and run some errands but I decided that I didn't want to leave the house with Junior. Instead I did errands here at home, washing bottles and whatnot. Silly, maybe, but I just don't want to leave the house.

Newtown is one town over from Bethel. I used to ride through part of Newtown every weekend (and Homebrew's team still does I think).

I don't know of anyone that was directly affected by this but it's been about 2 hours since I learned of it. I was out with Junior (doc appt - he's doing great and signs of teeth just under the gum's surface) until about 12:30 and then he was hungry and all that. When he was content I went to the computer and went into shock.

It's starting to hit home now. It's very emotional, tragic. Indescribable really. Junior is asleep - he was bouncing around until a short time ago, happy as could be. I can't imagine someone taking that away, just can't.

We got auto-alerts from the school system that there was an apparent shooting and the schools were on lockdown, so naturally we needed to find out what was going on. We were watching as coverage started. It seemed serious at first, with some injuries reported and it just got worse & worse as more information came out

I can't comment on how long it took as I was a pack a day smoker at the time and wasn't paying attention. I've heard 45 days.

I recall being winded after walking up a flight of steps when I first moved out. There was also a time when I got stuck in a tree well at 9K feet and couldn't extract myself until I rested for a few minutes. That was humbling.

The nose bleed stuff, it's ever present but I think it's more of a humidity thing. It's more of a crusty boogers with extras for me.

My FTP goes up by about 10% at sea level. I've never payed attention to my VO2max in Denver vs sea level but Ex's chart says the difference can be 20%. I'm intrigued and will watch it next time I have watts at sea level.

---------

Back to the tragedy at hand. Best wishes guys.

My wife is an elementary school teacher.

I also have a 2 year old and a 4 month old.

My wife's elementary school has a security system - a buzzer system that any visitor has to be let into the school's front office to get a pass.

It's very easy to get in, however, if you say you're the husband/father/relative/whatever of a student/teacher. In the case of the CT shooter, he was the child of a teacher, and I'm sure got buzzed right in.

I'm not sure what the answer is for school security... metal detectors? Guards? Dunno... but I think this needs to be looked at, hard, now. An armed and motivated shooter can get into most schools pretty quickly.

I hope there really a special place in hell for that kid. I'm a pacifist by nature but could only be angry and want to put that kid down like a rabid dog.
