I dunno man. I've had several 4x4s in Colorado and Utah, and the best crawler of them all was my 1942 Willy's CJ-2a. A truck with big tires for mud bogs, sure, but other than that those 6" military tread tires would sink down to where the traction was and just keep going. Easy enough to winch through a bog anyway, and wide tires aren't going to get you across everything unless you keep it over 40mph.

I grew up bouncing around in the back of CJ-5s, CJ-7s, and International Scouts, hunting with my dad. One time he winched the 7 over a 20' boulder, dangling vertical. I miss those days.

Actually, a Scout would be on my short list too, with the locker for all 4... You can get some of these trucks for as much as the damned tires would cost on an LX470, which is a respectable off-roader, but a horrible value for that job.

Colorado rednecks are much more refined though. At least they were in the last century. I mean, my dad was a gunsmith for fark's sake, and still chose to bowhunt... recurve, not compound.

Then there was the time a brake line went out in the scout, he rolled it 5 times off the trail. When the dust settled, he couldn't get out of his seat because a broadhead had sliced through his shirt sleeve and into the dash and was holding him in the truck. That's a close shave, right there, I don't care where yer frum.

//pluged the brake line with .22 bullet... out of the casing (pulled out w/pliers), winched back to trail, drove home.

Did I mention I'm the first one in my family to graduate from college? Well, the only one.

The boy just left the house with his new to him bike and a trainer to borrow, plus a few kits, and pretty well everything needed for early spring riding...

It was funny listening to him complain about the burn after being on the trainer for 15min during the fitting in the basement...

The 7mm Rem Mag is much more useful for the 300-500 yard shots provided by this property. If you really feel up for it there are plenty of hill to hill shots at 800+ which is reaching the limits of the round and glass. Well past the range of this shooter. Although I've been thinking of some of the 6mm rounds which provide lots of speed, decent power, and incredible accuracy, but a new rig with glass would be about the same as a high end bike.

The .300 Blackout is a great round in the high cap black rifle. Much more potential than the 5.56. Same capacity but the option to go with subsonic or full tilt really helps with the invasive feral hog population. Plus a suppressed .300 blackout subsonic has about the same sound signature as a .22 short, but much more punch.

For the turkey season we'll just opt for standard turkey loads in either 12 or 20 gauge. The birds don't hold on the land well due to poor roosting opportunities but if you can find them with an owl call at dawn you may get lucky.

Oh, and last season the total number of rounds fired on the land? 2 shots. Period. 365 days. Two shots. Two deer.

Jwible, about where is your hunting land?

My roommate in grad school had a place in Eufala, Ala., just across the border from Columbus. While I enjoy shooting for sport, I'm not much of a hunter. I do enjoy fishing though, and he had about a two acre lake on the property stocked with bass and brim. We had a lot of fun there.

One of the morons I grew up with had a father with a Scout. First car I ever drove and never had a lesson. Almost ran over the dad once. We got it stuck in the snow when we were about 13. There was a shovel and a winch so we got it out ourselves.

My FIL had a Scout way back when. I had a 77 Grand Wagoneer in college. That thing took a beating but never stopped.
