That sounds like a good plan though. There is a nanoscience school around me that has grown so quickly in the last 4 years its shocking. From what I understand they have people there doing just about everything. From vaccine design using nanoplatforms (whatever that means) to true material science stuff. They are always in the news too, billions of dollars getting invested there.

Nuts. I'm glad I was wrong about them being domestic, but this isn't much better.

The magnitude of this is hard to digest... news says the guy on the run is a 19 year old. How screwed up are people? When I was 19 all I wanted was a nicer car and more women.

News in the Twitter era is just insane. So much garbage gets out, you have no idea who or what to trust. CNN has been about as awful as possible.

I used to turn to CNN to find out what was really going on ..... maybe not such a good idea. Breaking news is not that reliable. I guess they need to fill the air with something, rather than say "we don't know", regardless of accuracy.

I'm so confused. I heard on NPR on my drive in that they'd only been in the country for a year. Now they've been here forever and went to high school here?

Either way, I can't imagine what Boston is like right now being all shut down. Must be weird.

I guess we need triple confirmation before believing anything. Quadruple if it's in the NY Post. They picked some kids at random, put them on the cover, and said the FBI was looking for them as the "Bag Men". The kid was afraid to go outside in case he'd get shot.

I refuse to get sucked in to media frenzies. I am not a slave to the media's insatiable need for eyeballs.

Yeah, the media is terrible these days. Huge echo chamber, plus the need to put something on the air and not get out-scooped, leads to them all following each other blindy down the path of "sources say".

Remember 3 days ago when CNN reported that a suspect was in custody? And then BBC and other reputable sites followed, and then all looked stupid when it wasn't true? They have no ethics anymore, they just put whatever speculative crap they can on TV because they have to fill 24 hours of news every day. So if they don't have any, they make some up.

I drive a Audi A4. I borrowed my mom's Lexus SUV for the past two weeks so that I could drive to the airport with my bike box for Battenkill. Didn't seem to bad. Gets the job done. Well, we just met and swapped cars back last night. HOLY CRAP. I remember why I paid so much for an Audi now. God it's so much better to drive and even just to sit in. Sometimes the hassle and cost of a German car is totally worth it!

Whether they did or not originally, they seem to have certainly done something now. Plus, if they didn't do it originally, they probably wouldn't have come out guns blazing with bombs strapped on. That's not exactly the behavior of innocent people. If they had accused me of it and named me as a suspect I'd call them up, tell them where I was and have a lawyer waiting with me when they got there. I wouldn't start shooting (I don't even own a gun though) and carjacking people.

For those of you with a casual interest in failure modes of structures etc, I can recommend just about any of the books by Henry Petroski. Very readable analysis of various design/process failures throughout history presented at a layman's level.

I borrowed my friends little red wagon to go get groceries. 10 mile round trip. A few days later I did it in my 1985 Yugo. It was sooooo much better.

Then I had a 7-11 hot dog...

Comparing an SUV to a sedan is like comparing a mountain bike to a road bike and declaring the road bike far superior on the road. My guess is if you borrowed a Lexus LFA you'd be less impressed with your sedan relative to the Japanese brand.

don't think i'd ever say this, but i hope the suspects get drawn and quartered or get the Salem treatment. F***ing bastards
It would be nice if people were found guilty first, but in this case I think you will get your wish.

the washington times (yeah, that 2nd rate dc newspaper) reported that the NYS police stopped someone near Buffalo. Turned out to be false.

people are also throwing out stuff from the police scanners, which is an unconfirmed source. OTOH, NYT updates its pages very slowly. It seems that theatlanticwire has the best mix between speed of info delivery and accuracy
