She think she wants to teach because that's the only thing she knows what to do with that degree. My guess is she'll end up in some career that has nothing to do with history and only gets it because she has a piece of paper.

Not sure I believe in the education system. But it is what it is.
My 11 year old is a pretty smart kid, her little friend not quite the same. Yesterday this is what they had to say when I asked them about school:
Math - why study math, that's why we have calculators
History - they're all dead anyways
English - lol
Reading - that's what youtube is for
Geography - our phones have GPS......

My BA is in History. After graduation I considered teaching and grad school but then opted for the easy and popular choice: took the LSAT and went to law school. Most of my classmates had liberal arts or social science degrees. In retrospect, if I had known I was going to end up going to law school I would have majored in philosophy.

The problem with teaching off a History degree is that she'll need another year or two for a teachers certificate or a master's degree in order to get a job (assuming it's a straight BA in History). So that's more cash down the drain. Every time I look around it seems that there are more job openings (and often better financial prospects) in the skilled trades, but no one seems to be encouraged to go that route anymore. All I see are kids (even those who really shouldn't be) being pushed to go to college for a 4 year degree.

another thing that ploticians (and we) lie to us/ourselves. Not everyone is suited for college, but bachelor's degree apparently is the new high school diploma, and the same kids who arent good fit for it end up in less than desirable jobs...

You can always look back and say, "man, I could have gotten here in a much more efficient manner." But that's not how life works. Some people luck into the perfect degree/career path for them. Others don't. I've gotten to experience a ton of things my co-workers can't fathom, despite the fact they have advanced further. Half of that is me justifying to myself my own path, but it's true nonetheless. My personal theory is that if you're trying to race yourself or anyone else through life, you're definitely going to be disappointed.

I can't decide who I'm more jealous of, the people who walked into the perfect career/life by accident, or the people who worked their ass off to create the perfect career/life. I did get to train monkeys for 4 years though. How many people can say that?

There are so many colleges, and so many different levels of education just for undergraduate, it's easy to get in somewhere, and have someone else pay. I was offered just shy of $100,000 from a safety school i applied to (as well as acceptance to their honors program), and most kids i know are offered unbelievable amounts of merit based scholarships. You're right about a bachelor's degree becoming the new hihg school diploma. I know a heck of a lot more college grads than high school grads (only high school).

I think my response still applies. The parallels between modern parenting books and management books are pretty funny.

Wish I knew about these programs when i was much younger. Having taken 16 years to get my BS, the days of working a 12 hour job, sleeping on the bus, and going to class were not fun.

Good catch. Also not allowed to go within 100 yards of schools b/c i peddled some crystal blue persuasion to kids, which makes it impossible for me to participate in quite a few bike races

edit: dammit waki, you arent supposed to disclose these thins unless i disclose them first

With those densely populated cities, staying 100 yards away from schools and playgrounds has to be tough...

It depends on the person. Will she use college? Is she more suited to a trade school? Military with GI Bill?

Did a super quick and dirty analysis. arbitrarily 25 years, 4 years of college @ 30k/yr, or 2 yr of trade @15k/yr, or military.
college starts @ 60k, 4% raises every year. trade starts @ 40k w/ 4% raises every year. military get paid 30k/yr while serving, jumps to 60k/yr after degree, 4% raises thereafter.

She likes the marketable stuff like poetry & literature. But got a bit too stressed out with school & dropped out. Going to drop back in for 2 half of the year though, so graduation is a still a possibility. Very good grades and SAT scores up until then.

That dude does seem to have some good ideas. Hell, a fully trained plumber or electrician 17 or so years out of high school like the wife and I are probably makes more than both of us combined as tenure-track (her) and non-tenure track (me) assistant professors of biology.

A couple years ago, we were celebrating Christmas at my wife's grandparents' house, and they all agreed with me that too many people were going to college (her grandpa taught high school building trades before retiring 30 years ago) and not enough were going to trade school, but, when it came time for gifts, they gave our then-newborn some money for her college fund. I jokingly clarified "or any post-high school training fund", and they got all huffy with, "Oh no, she is going to college" as if trade and other schools are good enough for other people out there, but not their granddaughter.

The only way I would want our daughter to be a bio major right now (who knows what things will look like in another 15 years), is if she was planning on going to PA school.

Hey my buddies that all became cops are pulling down 50-60K pensions and working full time jobs. Seemed like a silly idea at the time.
