Ask most mechanics and they will say that hate working on most TT bikes for just those reasons. Then add in all the tight clearances and it just adds to the effort.

Thanks for the input! Some of the German brands seem reasonably priced though (Canyon, Cube etc.). I have my eyes set on a Canyon Ultimate AL with 6800 which looks like a decent spec for the price (happy to take recommendations!). Yes, I will be paying VAT but I'll live with that.

Jim Fixx also outlived all the other men in his family, probably due to his running. My LBS guy, who I have known for 25 years, is in the same boat. All the men in his family have died from heart disease, most in their 40s. He is an ultra runner, having done 100 mile runs for years. He knows his heart is effed up, but still keeps going strong. I hope he sticks around for a while.

Canyon is a great bang for the buck. In Europe. Better deals can be found in the US.

Most of my old teammates have them. Not sure if this is still the case but be aware of the fact that they come with a proprietary stem, so make sure you order the right length.

You should also factor in the +/- $300 you'll spend bringing it home.

It's your money, but these days the whole "I want to buy a bike in Europe" thing is quaint at best.

Will also hopefully watch a stage or two of the Tour.
Renting will be your best bang/buck unless you already own a folding bike that fits in a conventional suitcase and can get on the airline without a fee. I know some Euro guys buy bikes here, take them home, ride them for 6 months, sell them and make money on it. Buying in Europe is very spendy.

It's not mine, it's a loaner, BMC time machine. Not sure what model year. It was fine, the TT course was a one way 5 miles on a mostly straight highway.

Anyway, still grateful for the loaner, I turned in a 9th place ride from a field of 50 40+ ers.

...not sure if this goes in the race report thread since I was a spectator: Arthrosurface Tour of Corsicana RR

A couple people had cameras so it might be posted eventually. Standing around before our race, watching the 4's finish, one guy solo with maybe 30 sec's, comes to the finish, in a huge gusty crosswind swirling around... riding what looks like an 808 front... tries to lift his hands off the bars (I'm yelling "don't do it!" ... he bobbles once, saves it, and goes to try again (!!!?!???) ... and BAM to the ground. 15 feet before the finish line. And I mean, he hit HARD. Probably will need a new helmet. So he starts getting up, everybody's yelling at him, and he tries to re-mount the bike... and he can't because it's all twisted from the crash and he's dazed... errybody yelling "run" "run" and here come the chasers still... he finally carries it across the line and collapses in the grass.

Lesson: DON'T DO THAT.
Lesson 2: He still won.

did he seriously damage himself or his bike? trying that stunt for what it ended up costing him is just.... sigh

on a side note, I'm signing up for my first cat 4 a stage race. Apparently, you can only sign up for the whole thing, and not skip the TT. It's only a 3 mile TT, so I guess I'm going eddy merckx

I wrapped up my first stage race today and it included a 9.9 mile TT. I went standard road bike but had my 50mm carbon wheels. I was surprised to see the amount of gear some guys were rocking for a Cat 4 TT. Full on skin suit, disk, helmet, etc.

Going for the awesome finish line photo backfires to the complete inverse. Beautiful.

I once went for a post-up, thinking I had won ( 30 seconds in front of the field). Turns out there was one other dude 17 seconds ahead of me who had been out there for forever. Luckily it was a mild "victory" salute, and still a pretty good performance so I might have done it again.

Any of you guys watch "Bob's Burgers?"

It's a pretty funny cartoon on Fox. In last night's episode, Bob goes to a burger convention, for a "meating of the minds," where he gets to meet all his friends from the Burger Forums includeing Beefer Sutherland. It does not go well. They do not like each other in real life.

I kind of wonder what it would be like if we had a 33 convention.
