I was in Santa Cruz for the 89 Loma Prieta Earthquake; about 8 miles from the epicenter. As bad as everything was damaged in our area we thought at first San Francisco was destroyed (since the initial news was that the Bay Bridge collapsed). Certain boom sounds still make me tense up and wait for the ground to shake.

Still the worst was being in an elevator during a 5.0 earthquake.

i was a mile or so north of santa monica--not sure if that mattered (though people around felt it).

didn't feel the one during the RR, either.

I was at the World Series during the 89 quake. Otherwise it would have been 50/50 I would have been on the freeway that collapsed, worked two blocks away and drove it a bunch.

Got to watch people loot stores on the way home. Every time I hear "april 29th, 1992" I get a whiff of nostalgia.

Actually have a pretty good list of natural disasters. Locusts are still on my bucket list.

I had to check to see if I wrote this in my sleep, I worked at Oakland Ironworks up to a short time before.

I was in a third floor apartment in Berkeley, I had time to get outside before the shaking stopped.

I was a textile salesman on the road at that time. I watched it on TV, but I was staying at a Holiday Inn Express.

I was living with my parents for the 1971 earthquake, a few miles from the epicenter. The house had some damage and the block walls fell down but the hospital across the street where I worked was destroyed. I had just graduated high school and got my first car, with car payments, so I found a job in a factory making printed circuit boards.
For the 1994 quake, I lived in the mountains and my already long commute was made into a 2 hour each way ordeal when a section of interstate 5 fell down.

Good point. I have a couple teammates who could probably use it right now. I take those skills for granted. I was riding in a group last week and had my wheel swept, but overlap was only about 6", so easy to back out of and mostly hold my line. Bump drills are a good thing to put on the to-do list.

There's another post somewhere on the interweb about "a guy in red & white knocking me over".

While I'm sure it was an unpleasant experience, that clip is pretty amusing in that it just sounds like a muffled, "WHUMP" as he hits the deck.

A teammate and I were practicing bump drills a long while back, and he got to put it to good use against a pickup truck the night before his wedding. Truck tried to change lanes on top of him, but he leaned into it, and rode it out as the truck moved into the lane. Unfortunately, when the driver finally realized what he was doing, he moved suddenly back into the left lane and my buddy hit the deck.

He made it to the ride that night, but didn't tell his wife bout it 'till after the wedding.

It's like taking pictures of the Grand Canyon. One could spend a lifetime on the subject and never take the same shot twice.

One day, it will be gone. And you will realize how poorly you treated it.

neither of my grandparents went bald until their 60s and 70s (one died at 63, and started to bald at 60). I have a long way to go before i lose my hair (plus it's so thick i don't think it's leaving me).

On the chance that any of you are available, we have spots open for the track certification class at Alkek in Houston. $25 gets you a three week class, meeting Wednesday nights, and your upgrade/track certification to race as a 4. There is only one day left to register, and this will probably be the last class run for a long while, so if you want to come race, now is the time.
