Happy to be riding again normally. Last week was pretty stressful !

The fitter(well known in the area as the God of fitters) raised my saddle by 3/4" and said that I was way too low. Lo and behold, 3 months later my hamstring tendon is blowing up and the back of my knee hurts.

I lowered my saddle back down 3/4" and it seems like the pain has subsided(knock on wood). My quads are lighting up on hard'ish, sustained, and seated efforts so I think the right position for me is somewhere in the middle but for now I don't want to take any chances so I'm going to leave it alone at the lower position. I had the bike setup this way from the 1st fitter for about a year.

Fitters = black magic...

Who was your fitter? Nate Loyal? Jim Manton?

It could also be that you've adapted to riding with a low seat, so your muscles are in tune that way even though its not optimal.

Nate, I think he knows his stuff but I think he made too drastic of a change for me. Maybe I do need to be 3/4" higher but I think it has to be progressive.

Probably, you put a ton of miles and the legs are adapted to move with whatever saddle height was set.

I had a fit this weekend with Nate Koch (Jim Manton's assistant), who moved my seat forward and up a tad, and had me put in Specialized footbeds. After one ride, I can tell the difference, seems like I have a tad bit more power and use the quads a glutes a bit more than before. Of course, the big difference between me and you is my legs are still adapting / strengthening.

I've poo poo'ed on fits before, but I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong!

My personal opinion is that after you leave the fitter, you get a sense of excitement about your new fit producing more power or being more comfortably. That usually subsides pretty quickly for me and I realize that I just have to get used to the new position lol.

i ride with a lower than normal saddle. Idk why, but it's more comfortable, and more powerful for me.

but seriously, bike fit isn't rocket science or mysterious witchcraft. Most people can probably fit themselves pretty well with an iphone camera and a trainer. I had this hotspot issue with my shoes, and the first time I went to the fitter, the assistant made it worse. during the followup, the main fitter did it, and she tried everything to make it work in the end. it was mostly trial and error.

this thread has potential.

whatever happened to the concept of making fit changes in very small increments? if I move the saddle a millimeter, it takes me days to adjust.

I dunno. I did a really nice Diablo climb, got home, and was like, I'm just going to raise my saddle a cm and move my saddle forward a cm.

I kept the height but moved the saddle about half-way back.

I'm so far removed from the retul fit I had (where the guy was like "yeah, you're pretty good already") that I wonder if I've self-fit myself in the BG fit range now!

I think the problem with a lot of fits is that they have become to systematic, i.e., your leg is this long, so your saddle should be here. This fails to take into account a person's true physiology.

Ovoleg's experience is a perfect example of this as his leg length indicates that his saddle should be 1.9 cm higher than it is, but his hamstrings are clearly not flexible enough to handle that level of extension.

My last fit assessment was with a physical therapist who also is an active cyclist. My PT for my knee issues had me see him. He didn't take any measurements, but rather checked my flexibility off the bike and compared that to how I was positioned on the bike. He spent much of his time poking and prodding me as I pedaled to feel whether muscles were being strained beyond their flexibility levels when pedaling. To me, that seemed like a more effective way of determining my fit.
