During my race 3/4 last week, last lap, a guy attacked just before a sweeping 180-degree bend about 600m from the finish. He turned to look at his gap, and went out of the turn at high speed and crashed hard. The details are not coming together quickly, but he broke his spine and severed part of his spinal cord, and is just starting to get feeling back in his legs. They think he hit a tree (which I don't see as possible, because I think there are race care barriers in the way).
Sad news. Scary stuff. LA visited him in the ICU, which is generous of him.

Thinking about starting the hunt for a new rain bike, ditching my current aluminum CX bike for something a little more confortable that won't beat me up. Something like a Roubaix that i can but fenders on and ride when it's nasty. I'm having trouble thinking of other similar frames. Any recommendations?
Another way to skin this cat would be to get a road frameset and use Crud Roadracer II fenders, which don't require eyelets but do work well at keeping the water and crud off of you. You can run 700x23s and still have room for the fenders on most bikes. I did this last year and it worked well - I was popular wheel to follow in a rainy paceline too.

Frameset or complete bike? If the former, pickings are pretty slim to my knowledge. If the latter, I think that the aluminum versions of the Trek Domane and the Cannondale Synapse come with fender eyelets, as does the Specialized Secteur (aluminum version of the Roubaix). Any of those would probably be more comfy than your CX bike.

Does he follow a low sodium diet?

Fixed that for you.
The promoter said that he halves his insurance costs by going outside USAC. This was at a USAC promoter meeting I attended. My thought is that the $3 surcharge isn't that much, and saving $1.50 seems pretty ridiculous. Just increase the hefty entry fee by $1.50.
However by going outside USAC he also avoids having to follow pretty much any rule he doesn't want to follow. Field size limits, required officials etc (although honestly I don't know what he does in terms of caravan stuff, if he follows USAC requirements), these are all things that are up in the air once you're outside USAC's jurisdiction.
I try to avoid renegade races. I did one, I didn't realize it went renegade until I got there (New Britain Crit). I was tempted to not show my license and to register for the Cat 4s (I'm a 3) because, frankly, my USAC license doesn't mean anything once I'm outside USAC. Okay, fine, I knew everyone at the race (promoter etc) but still, it was annoying. It's a USAC waiver, the officials are using the USAC guidelines, doesn't seem right to not pay the $3/rider to USAC for using USAC's structure, training, certification, etc.

He uses the Purple Knights for motos and SRAM neutral support for the higher categories. I don't know what he does for the Cat5's. I've always told people to bring a flat kit.
The National Senior Games, for all intents and purposes, were pirate races, although they used USAC officials, and squashed their recommendations every chance they could.

Tell them to stop being poseurs. That you know at heart they're nothing but cheese eating surrender monkeys like the rest of their countrymen and they should just get on with it and roll over already. You need to assert your dominance over them and teach them their natural place. 'Merica, **** yeah.

Odd hyponatremia (low sodium) is common amongst crappy marathoners, not Boston qualifiers. Fast runners have high sweat rates and don't like to slow down to drink from aid stations. Slow runners have lower sweat rates and like to slow down and drink at each station which leads to sodium dilution.

Insurance. You have to know the promoter to understand. Since it's a pirate race, USAC field sizes do not apply. There's really not a sketchy part of the course, so if your fields were sketchy, it wasn't the roads. However, I will tell you this, Route 202N from Belchertown to New Salem is a friggin' disaster this year. Ho Chi Minh trail type of disaster. Huge sections of torn up pavement that take up almost the whole lane. If there will be sketchiness, that's where it will be. I haven't seen the back side of the course, Rt. 122S and the small roads coming out of Harwick, but we had a rough winter up here and it won't be smooth.
