We've been happy with our current deal, but most of us don't even use the Speedsters because we actually much prefer our personal bikes to them and would rather either get better bikes or no bike at all and use the money for either travel coverage or other gear. We were discussing about trying to get a better deal for bikes because there are several other similar performing teams in our area that get much better and we're trying to discourage people from jumping ship for better bikes at other teams, as bikes are a pretty big factor for people picking new teams.

I made it half way through the training bible when I bought it last winter. I opted for the coaching route which has paid off for me pretty well

Even if you are coached reading the training bible isn't a bad idea. It's best if the person knows what the coach is scheduling certain things for and have at least a little background knowledge.

I should read that again now that I have a year of racing almost complete. I'm actually almost at the point where I want to suck it up, spend the money, and hire a coach as well. Hell, I'm joining a team... time to get serious!

Almost as impressive as Matt - I'm officially a Cat 4! Upgrade took only 24 hours. Can't wait to race Thursday and have it mean something besides just finishing the race.

All joking aside, congrats on the upgrade. Enjoy the 4s.

I think maybe I tried to read it too early, as in I didn't have any practical knowledge at that point. It would be a good refresher, I'll probably read it on the trainer over the winter

I know. My best result was 2nd :/
Haha, no you're totally right!
Yeah, I figured they all sent back secondaries because they just wanted the cash and the primary application didn't actually mean anything other than a cash grab from the med school association.
Edit: Sorry if that sounded like a bit of a buzz kill. Congrats on the progress.

It really ticked me off when the secondaries asked the same questions that had been on the primary. That's kind of what clued me in that they didn't even read the first one. Of course I did all this back in the days of the paper application. My MCAT was all day and had a writing section and was only offered twice a year. Talked with some of my students last week and they were talking about how one of them got done with the whole thing in like 2-2.5 hours because it was self paced on a computer. I guess you're lucky you got yours in before the new format that everyone's afraid of.

I also get to apply to schools *for free* (i.e. I pay only for primaries past the first 15) because my family is broke and our sum income qualified for the fee assistance program which for us was under 300% of poverty level for a family of four. I was out of work for more than half the year last year, so this is a boon. I would have cleared out my savings just with applications otherwise. I'm a bit of an idiot though, as I'm going to apply to 30-35 schools. I have 30 on the list right now, but might add a few dream schools. I'd rather pay the 60 bucks and hear a no then wonder. I'm fully prepared to take a few days off work to finish pre-writing secondaries.

Random thoughts and kind of "tech" related and 41 thoughts, but whatever.
So, for some reason, I have 5 bikes. Not sure why, not sure how, but I do (hope to only have 2 in the near future). It's amazing how different each one feels. I have been riding a Giant TCR Advanced for most of this season and recently picked up a Scott Foil. I took the Foil out for a ride last night and was surprised at how much more stiff the Giant is. I think I stopped halfway up each little climb to make sure I didn't have a flat tire when riding the Foil (same wheels on both bikes). Everyone said the Foil was a rigid uncomfortable bike, but it's kind of a comfort bike in comparison. It won't be a hindrance by any means, but I was just surprised at how noticeable the difference was.

Eh. I graduated college in 2010, I should have been in school by now, but I've enjoyed (most) of what I've done in the meantime, so it's all good.

But my score expires this year so this is an all eggs in this basket situation. Realistically, I might add just a couple more reaches which are likely to reject me outright.
I'm honestly hoping for an acceptance at a school that's reasonable in my hierarchy relatively early on, that way I can just decline interviews. My schools are concentrated in Boston/NYC/Philly/Chicago, and I live in boston, have friends in NYC, and have parents that live in the philly burbs. Chicago will be expensive if there are a few repeated trips.
I'll figure it out. If I am lucky enough to get more than one acceptance, the potential of just pitting schools against each other for financial aid/merit will hopefully make up the difference (and then some) 5 years from now.
