Ever since I've been back, I've adjusted my work schedule so I can be on the bike by 5. Unfortunately this has changed the traffic patterns on my routes compared to normal. So places I used to ride and do intervals aren't exactly the safest any more. Not necessarily a bad thing, I need to explore more. I tend to get into grooves and do the same routes over and over. The one thing I'm having trouble with his a threshold route. I had a really nice loop I could do during threshold intervals, but traffic backs up on it at this time of day now. I have a couple more loops I'm going to try over the next couple of weeks.

I have exactly the same problem. Patience is thin during commute times. I don't have a problem with stop and go but rather with the amount of traffic around me when I'm hammering.

Yes, rush hour traffic is a big issue for me too since moving to Boston. I am planning to switch to AM training rides as much as possible, because the morning rush hour is much more spread out. I hope. I can certainly still do my training in the evening, and generally that's what I've been doing, but roads that are normally very nice become quite busy at 5 or 6 PM. Basically it reduces my route options, as I still have some that are tolerable, but others become quite scary.

Most of my workouts during the week are done on the trainer. With after work traffic, I just can't get in most of my workouts on the road.

I specifically moved to an area that was more bicycle friendly. Its not Portland, but for SoCal its one of the better cycling towns. A lot of people drive out here from other towns just to cycle.

My old neighborhood was a cycling death trap.

I have some steep fire road climbs near home, like to do them after work. Stupid mtb needs a new drivetrain, gotta get on that.
Also some quiet road climbs around here, and there's a dam with a mup on top for when I want to do dam intervals.

Last Saturday there was a big charity ride in the area, and in fact all three routes (25, 50, 100 mi) went up the hill to basically the entrance to the complex where I live. I had to move the trailer for courtesy reasons (car show and they were using the private lot as part of their vendor space, with the owner's permission, and I park my trailer there, with the owner's permission). I couldn't safely pass everyone on the hill, a half mile drag that has narrow shoulders.

I realized that if I was that worried and had to slow down etc that the overall driver tolerance levels out there would be lower. Therefore I chose to ride indoors. I frequently make that decision, based on traffic patterns around here.

Just made the mistake of calling a shop near me asking when the 105 11 speed will come out, then asked about CAAD 10's with the 10 speed 105. $1200!!!! Apparently most bikes with 5700 105's are heavily discounted starting now, so the 11 speed is probably coming sooner than people thought. On the one hand, the 5700 will feel like a dream compared to my Sora, but on the other hand, maybe I should wait another year and then get a 5800 or maybe a 6800 equipped bike.

Edit: I was told 3 weeks until 2015's are in stock. Can't believe it's mid July already!

I always go one generation prior to the latest and greatest. I doubt 11 speed 105 is $500 better than 10 speed. The only real thing you have to think of (which is a big one and the reason I'm going 11) is wheels. Buying a new wheelset is going to require some type of conversion (or so I've been told, I just ride bikes).

one of the things to consider is 10speed may become difficult to find parts. I tried to do a 10speed electronic upgrade and it's a bit of work.

The Shimano RS-11 wheels that come on the 2014 Caad 10 105 are 11-speed compatible. So, you can always upgrade to 11-speed later.

By now, new wheels should pretty much all be 11 speed compatible out of the box. You'd need a spacer to make them work with 10 speed cassettes. My current deal with going to 11 speed is that my primary racing/training wheelset is built around Chris King R45 hubs. The rear hub can be converted to 11 speed, but it costs damn near as much as a brand-new hub. So that's really held me back. I might as well wait until I can just afford new wheels. Right now, I simply can't. Of course, there's also cross-compatibility between different bikes to consider, but that's less of a concern.

Eight speed stuff is commonly available, so I doubt that will be a dearth of ten speed parts any time soon.

I don't think the 105 will be hugely better than your Sora if your Sora is well tuned. With that, if you're itching for a new ride, the CAAD10 is pretty solid. I've been bouncing all over lately trying to find that one bike that fits just right and checks all my boxes. If I could do it all over from scratch, I'd just go CAAD10 and ride on. $1200 isn't a bad price either (assumes you get some add'l perqs like tune-ups, too).

I've been running Campy 10s stuff for a while now. Cassettes are getting a little less common but otherwise things seem pretty available.

Recently I bought a 9s Shimano cassette for a mtb.

I think that 10s parts will be around for a while. A whole group, maybe not, but common wear items yes.

mechanical 10 speed was around a lot longer than electronic 10 speed.

If I wasn't heavily invested in 10 speed and was buying a new bike I'd certainly give a lot of consideration to going 11.

Junior kissed my cheek, unprompted, unexpectedly, when I put him to bed tonight. I guess I'm pretty affectionate but it still surprised me. That 13th in the field suddenly seems fine. Heh.
