Why hit yourself with a big carb load right before you go to bed? I can see something like cottage cheese or something with a good chunk of protein to do what you're talking about, but a sandwich seems counter-productive. An Orowheat-type whole wheat/grain bread is ~20g carbs per slice. So 40 grams of carbs is going to give you a big blood sugar spike and insulin response. It seems like this would be a good way to disturb sleep. There really should be no reason to have to get up in the middle of the night to eat. That seems like it almost has to be a food choice issue.

I have no sleep issues, even with big carb load before bed. On big training days I often eat dinner 1-1.5hr before bed, and can sometimes consume 70g+ of carbs. Training makes me plenty of tired.

One thing that does disturb my sleep is waking up to pee though. Like 2+ times a night. So annoying!!

I want to be prepared in case there is any bedtime action...

If I don't eat, I don't sleep. It could be because I struggle a lot of days to get all my food in and by bedtime I am still often behind but man do I sleep like a baby.
When I was really big I used to eat a full meal (steak and all the fixings) and then go to sleep.

If you want your body to fully recover give it the rebuilding fuel it needs then go to sleep you get better recovery while at rest.
legit advice, I used to believe in this when I used to lift a lot but it seems like weight is so critical in cycling that I try to make sure I stay as low as I can without suffering performance wise. I'm going to give this a shot when I start back up again and see how it goes. I actually really like pb sandwhiches

I've been known to eat a jar of peanut butter in 3 days, lately I just keep it out of the house!

Every year my wife has the family do a 5k breast cancer awareness walk, and I decided this year I wasn't going to walk it. About 2 miles in, my Peroneus Longus (the tendon I had repaired) screamed and I had to walk. Not too smart since I haven't run in at least a year (since the last one). Probably going to take 2-3 off the bike =\.

a jar of peanut butter about every 3 days is pretty average for me as well, although never on sandwiches unless i'm taking it for ride food. if you're buying all natural peanut butter (NO hyrogenated oils), there are definitely worse things you could be eating. at some point i'd like to switch to unsalted all natural, but the store brand doesn't offer that and I can't justify the extra $1 per jar.

to get this thread back on topic...i did 4.5 hours today. found some awesome new roads including a really great climb. it's not even a strava segment which is really surprising around these parts.

Hill repeats last night, 7 times up Sydenham, power and HR constant through all of them. There was a slight wind coming down the hill so times were slower then have been, but everything was bang on. Going down was fun, nothing like hitting 75kmh as you round the bottom corner. Just have to make sure you keep an eye out for traffic from the side streets and any errant squirrels....

4.8 mile run last night. It was raining and I washed my bike both Sunday and Monday and wasn't about to go for the trifecta.

Off day today. I'm teaching tonight, which means 15 hours on campus. I think I'm going to take tomorrow off from the day job and go for a ~3 hour ride in the morning.

Actually it's been an awesome fall so far. Haven't had to wear the tights or jacket yet. Most nights it's double jerseys, arm and knee warmers. There's even be a few just shorts and jersey days. Hopefully this means we are in store for another mild winter!
