I ride every day. 250-350 miles/week. It's NBD around here. Lots of people riding that volume.

When I was in my masters program I was riding about 100 miles per week: commute there, commute back x 7 days a week.
Of course if you count the times I stayed on campus working all night it was less.

Which is why I have no pretensions about ever reaching Cat 2 in this district.

shovelhd 05-06-14 05:58 PM

Fudgy is a young Cat2. Perspective, people.

thechemist 05-06-14 05:58 PM

I just about up chucked today doing some intervals. Feels good to be on the bike after a few days off.

I'm 34 and I've had my ass handed to me in 2 of the 3 p12 Road Races I've tried!

So you have some things to learn about training and racing at that level. I have no doubt that as long as you figure these things out you will succeed, and you are just one year from mainstream Masters.

My point is why people compare themselves to you that are not at your level.

Fair enough. It's even worse if you consider how inefficient my volume is! Half my miles are just to be outside.

first thought: 34 sounds young to me. Frequently some of the best guys in the NE are in their 30s.
second thought: Every day?

jsutkeepspining 05-06-14 06:27 PM

Don't worry last week i got in a mssive 8 hours.

Once you get used to the speed/intensity you will be fine. It's just a culture shock to have everyone as the "race winner" versus the 1-5 guys in the 3 race who could survive a 1/2 race.

On a whim, hitched onto the local TNW instead of my planned workout. SUCH a good idea. Yeah, my legs were pretty crap, but I hadn't ridden with a group in over six months, not counting the two crits I've done so far this season. Big morale boost. Now to get faster!

Well if it makes you feel any better I do 4-12 hours per week during the season.

mattm 05-06-14 11:29 PM

San Jose training crit, 45 minutes and 93 TSS.

Didn't win, but raced really stupidly (attacked the break a bunch) just to make it hurt more.

Good training!

rbart4506 05-07-14 03:56 AM

Did the weekly Tuesday night crit. Only one race at this point of the year so my ass was handed to me. Holy hell those guys are fast! Much of the time was spent cross eyed trying to surf wheels. Video shows I need to do a much better job if getting into the pack, but the pace was probably more the I can handle anyway. Still got a great workout in.

Next week there will be a B race so I'll test myself there.

6 hours in April. 3 hours in May so far.

Someone gave me kudos and a comment on Strava about my "riding a lot" or something, back in September. I clicked on his name to bring up the comparison thing on the sidebar. He averaged 22 hours a week. A week! I was floored. I rarely do that in a month now.

I plan on entering the B race Tuesday next week. The A race looked brutal. The B race had most of the riders that I race against in Cat 3 races. The A race was primarily 1-2s.

ovoleg 05-07-14 09:16 AM

20mins of 55W last night watching Star Wars Clone Wars :p

I feel pretty decent and likely could hammer it a bit harder but I am going to wait until next week until I see my PT to see what they say. For now I am just moving the legs to keep circulation going.

I forgot how boring the trainer was...Wish I could ride the rollers instead but I don't want to risk flying off of them and failboating my whole recovery.

hack 05-07-14 09:23 AM

Recovery ride last night around 15 miles or so with a non-cycling buddy (he's going to try a tri and I'm trying to get him into cycling because he'd do very well). Easy conversational pace using roads, MUPs, whatever.

you w0t m8?

This is whats awesome about low FTP, hit your TSS targets early :). Fudgy's 250-350 miles a week is prolly like 300 TSS.

jst, you did 8 hours of Stricklands Ice Cream!

I can't believe you are riding multiple days already on the trainer. I'm not sure how supportive PT will be of that. :P

TexMac 05-07-14 10:06 AM

Yeserday went to survey crit course and did 20 miles of z1 and 5 15sec sprints. Noticed one tough corner and the finish line is right on where the headwind blows the most. I'm nervous as hell since it's my first crit.

Walking pneumonia, myelogram, epidural, family, work, and weather.

On the plus side I feel rested.

Doctor was cool with it, told me to stop if any signs of pain come up, no pain yet. Hey I waited 2.5 weeks unlike Tenton who was on the trainer the next day lol.

Before the trainer I was doing leg raises/extensions on the bed, pretty boring too.

I would rather just slouch around to be honest, not really in the mood to be on the trainer doing 50W, its boring enough when you're pushing it, it's even more boring when you're not even pedaling.

Today is my 3 week operation anniversary, 3 more weeks till I can get ride of crutches :(
