94 miles today, I think that's a new personal record.

Morning ride + ride to San Jose to see the start of stage 3 of Tour of California + Alviso "Crit".

Morning ride felt great, I was rested enough to tackle the final steep hill and gradual incline; moved up beforehand but was still too far back and had to dodge countless fellows who were running out of steam, and by then there was a gap between me and the handful of leaders.

Alviso Crit was fun, very hot and I was low on energy but played near the front a lot anyway. Got in a few failed breaks. Last lap sat on Alto Velo dudes wheel at the front, hopped back and forth between him and his teammate as they kept trading pulls. Then the first guy meant to pick up the pace for his team but jumped pretty hard and I thought it was a horrible time to waste my last reserves so I let a small gap form hoping someone would fill it. Instead people just started yelling and waiting and finally came around for a long sprint. Eh, I should have gone hard and got on the guys wheel when he went early because I ended up eating too much wind to make up the ground. But bad luck for everyone: a truck was driving along slowly just before the finish and neutralized everyone. We just called it a day and left.

Yesterday I rode only to and from work, home early, as I was sick. Today is the first day with no riding since Feb 9th. Probably tomorrow too, then time to start over with the consistency plan.

I need one of those too. Was off the bike for 3+ weeks dealing with a wicked respiratory infection. My asthma probably didn't help things, but I couldn't walk the 1/2 mile to work without coughing up a lung. 10+ hours in the last week, and that's a lot for me, so hopefully I can keep up the training and get my legs back soon.

Tuesday night training crit. Did the early race. Stuck with pack. Tried to bridge to the break, but legs were still feeling the effects of the weekend. Bumped some elbows, got my wheel chopped in a corner. Did not crash and did not get rained on, late race got called 30min in due to lightening.

Watched the post race video and I still spend way too much time on the sides of the pack. Have to work on squeezing into the middle.

    Good night on the bike.

Back on the bike this week for the first time since my crash on 29 March. I'm taking it easy; 42 minutes Monday, 31 yesterday, 45 minutes with 3x5' low Z4 intervals today. My coach has me going by HR and RPE due to the time off; I'll do an FTP test in about three weeks to set power zones again. It feels really good to be back on the bike!

20' test today, up 22 freaking Watts from 4 weeks ago. I've been flat freaking forever, and finally get a bump.

I set up a barter with my coach (photos for his new business if he coaches me off this plateau -- similar time investment each way). We've only had time for one conversation so far (he's out in Cali every year this time of year) three weeks ago, so I made one basic change to my workouts, and my threshold takes its first big jump in two years (highest it's been since my big illness).

Summary of changes: push threshold instead of pull... in the sort of arrangement that gets criticism in this thread.

    Allow me to say: ?!?!!!!??!!!!!!

Context please... you've been at this for a while, I find it very hard to believe that you just added 22 watts to the ceiling in a month with SST work or similar. Are you regaining power you had in the past?

He's recovering from a long period of post surgical complications. His point, and his elation, is well made and well deserved. He worked really hard to get back to where he was by his traditional means but it wasn't working, so he changed it up. I'm not really surprised although I'm very happy for him. Sometimes all it takes is a change.

    Thanks all.

Yeah, this was really a breakthrough, and you're right Shovel, the change should have been obviously needed now that I look back on it, but I have not been heavily fatigued by feel or by measured TSB.

For the brief background that Shovel covered, my highest FTP was 360W, at 167 lbs. I gained a bit of weight back (intentionally), and training limitations dropped me down to 340W. I floated there for a couple years, and was still able to win some races there. Then one night (super bowl 2012) I had a really bad stomach cramp and vomiting. I got through the night and didn't feel better the next day. The following day I went to the Dr. and he discovered that I had a ruptured appendix. Massive infection after 36 hours of sitting on it, paralyzed intestines, emergency surgery, a week in the hospital and another week in bed. My surgeon is an avid cyclist, and he told me it was going to be bad for a while and that as strong as I was going in, I would be knocked out by this.

When I got back on the bike, after two months of training, FTP was 230W. I pushed it up to 300W a couple times over the last two years, and in April I was sitting at about 290W off of a 312W 20' test (using Monad and a good 5' test the same week). The plateau was looking frustrating again. Today I tested at 334W, so I still have another 15 or 20W to go.

WR fitness fluctuates more than anyone's I've ever seen. 5w ftp gain for me is like wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo and here rockets is getting 20w in 4 weeks haha. Helps when fitness and volume are lower and training increases after break or an injury/surgery as in rockets' case.

Yeah, it took about a year to get that first 70W back, and then nothing for a year. I guess FTP is only around 316W right now, but it's nice to actually be able to look back at where I used to be now, and think it's possible again one day.

Suffering today was epic. In the last 90 seconds, I was trying to decide if I could disconnect my legs from my brain and hold power while I fought off the vomiting, or if it was worth it to lose 5 pedal strokes and vomit right then so I could concentrate again. I held it all together, and didn't have anything to vomit anyway.

You should sell your last 4 weeks' training plan.

Congrats WR on getting those watts back!

    ----------------

Stahl Ride this morning. 75 miles and 5700 feet. It got up to the upper 90s Fahrenheit. The heat combined with 94 miles yesterday = I am not feeling great - a bit too much work for these temps! The two 20 minute climbs felt hard but were only 95% and 90%. I have been pouring food and water down my throat for the past 2 hours.

Not mine to sell. I've been friends with this coach for nearly a decade, but he holds his cards close to his chest unless you're paying him. We were at dinner when we struck the barter deal, and he pretty much vomited a bunch of training stuff I'd never heard before all over me. It was seriously hard to keep up with him. I absorbed what I could, he left town to the ToC, and I applied some of it. More to come.

Mentored the local women's training race tonight. Was running late so I TT'd all the way out there. Not quite a PR, but close. Good numbers but hellishly hot night. Tried to eat when I got home, but stomach is still not happy. 139tss.
