Several layers to this:
1) Can I get stronger without gaining muscle?
-Yes, to a point. Improved technique can improve weight lifted/moved so with that in mind you can. That caps off though, at which point you will need to gain some muscle to increase strength. Given that cycling is about power to weight, it's up to you to figure out that balance for you.
2) I don't know what you mean by bulkier. Muscle is more dense than fat and you end up with the same weight if you have less of it than fat, so if you feel more muscular, then kudos, but 'bulkier' would make me think you gained fat.
Point is, you'll need more muscle to get stronger. So yes, you'll need to gain some weight if you want to keep making progress in the gym.
I mean... Are you saying catabolic without protein supplements or protein at all? It would be idiotic to go to a protein-less diet, but your body can synthesis proteins pretty with carbs (see: krebs cycle/transamination)

I get what you are trying to say (lifting for strength versus hypertrophy) but muscle mass is absolutely required for strength.

most of us could increase our strength without muscle mass gains via neurological gain in better muscle fiber recruitment, i.e. noob gains.
maybe not in our legs, given that most of use those regularly.

Scott Foil seatpost slipped mid climb during a relatively high intensity ride last night. At first it was a centimeter or two then just a full slip with the saddle all the way down to the top tube. Not cool...applied more fiber paste and cranked the bolt down this AM. Hope this holds.

use a torque wrench? that thing needs to be 8-10nm to hold.
also, check the top tube to be sure the edges of the plug/bolt assembly aren't pushing into the fiber at the top tube, which is what lead to my first warranty.
here's a picture of me getting ****ed in a race by this problem!

Yup...that's how I was looking until I found a spot to pull off. I'll check it over this afternoon to make sure there is no top tube damage. No torque wrench though. I do need to pick one up one of these days and this may be the final straw for that.

Missed my 6 AM wake-up call this morning. Oh well, I'll ride in the evening. The hardest part of switching to a morning workout schedule is getting to bed early enough. Maybe I should shift my schedule to getting up early for every day of the week, not just days with workouts.

I know it's crazy and I hadn't really put it into that perspective. To be fair, the frame was substantially cheaper than $3k, but the torque wrench cost is still a small percentage of the frame cost.

i just have a $20 "torque key" which just maxes out a 5nm. much cheaper than a fancy pants torque wrench, but of course more limited.
