I don't really agree with that for most people. Especially racers. We should have enough buffer to where we can maintain a decent speed uphill even keeping it in z2. All we have around here are sharp hilly rollers and I have no issues maintaining z2 or lower z3 going up and then going down.

idk, maybe i just suck? the riding around here is constantly up or down and usually pretty steep (see this: https://www.strava.com/activities/89029072 and keep in mind that that's iphone elevation which underestimates compared to garmin by ~20%). my rides are always pretty damn slow, unless i'm slamming the climbs. idk, man.

Yeah that's pretty hilly and I could see that slowing you down a bit. Speed doesn't really matter that much to me though, so wouldn't change my plan of riding z2 if I needed to ride z2. The problem with blasting up the climbs is that it can add a lot of additional fatigue to what you might think is a z2 or endurance ride. Depending on your training that can add up and prevent gains longer down the road.

My area is more legit rollers, where it's super hilly, but what comes up must come down kinda thing so it keeps my speed up. Here's a ride from last Sunday (71% in z2 power): https://www.strava.com/activities/88831368

i don't have power anymore, either. i'm just thinking back to when i did have power. i don't "care" about speed, per se, but there's a point when it gets kind of ****ty riding slow.

Did the Foxy's century in Davis, CA today. Not sure what the power numbers were like, since I didn't bring the bike w/ the Quarq, but I spent a good chunk on the front of our little group. It was a great day in the saddle. It took a good 100km for the legs to warm up, but it was smooth sailing after that! Still amazed by the quality of riding out here. You guys are truly blessed!

I was hoping to jump in on this one, but it sold out pretty quick.

Day at the Velodrome with my club. Fun stuff; not as hard as the last session - this instructor took a lot breaks between efforts.

Besides few laps at threshold, I'd say most of it was zone 1/2. Rest week incoming then I'm going to really really try to keep it mellow for 90% of my rides. I'll allow for 1 anything-goes ride a week.

4.5 hours today, did Old La Honda for the first time (nice!), Alpine Rd for the 2nd time (boring), and Page Mill Rd for the millionth time (still sweet).

14 or so hours for the week - base1 is going well, thanks for asking!

Long downhills kill z2 time though. I was doing some long dowhills today (miles of downhill @ 8+%), and you can't really pedal it since there are sharp turns and hidden driveways. Not to mention even if I did pedal now in then it's barely upper z1.

That said I can still work on keeping it in the right zones for sure.

If you listen to Phil Maffetone talk about base training, he's quite happy to have you walk hills. He may be training people capable(time wise) of much more volume, but interesting none the less.

Uhh I dunno. I took a right off Portola and then a sign says "road closed in 2 miles" or whatever, and it climbs up (at a mild 4%) to a dead end private driveway. Small road that's one lane part of the way.

5hr of pain today. Feeling that couch work I was doing about 2.5 weeks ago followed by this intense volume. Also got lost in a really bad section of ATL. Thought I was going to die when I stopped to check my phone/google maps for directions because so many people were just walking around.

I just got to spend a rare weekend away from home and went down to Tucson AZ for a weekend of riding (and eating) with friends. It was a lot of fun! We did the big Shootout group ride on Saturday and a nice, hilly ride in Southern AZ today. It was so nice to get out of the Phoenix area and ride somewhere new. The Shootout was a really fun, fast ride. They seem to welcome and expect visitors. I was getting really bored of riding around my side of town. Really refreshing to ride with some fast folks in a different part of AZ!

5.5 today. Thought about pushing it to 7 since I was feeling peachy, but cut it short because I was getting bored, and October is a dangerous time to be getting bored on a bike.

Hooked up the with the Metromint ladies for a nice ride around Folsom Lake. Another 4.5hrs with over 4000ft of climbing, not bad the after a century. Spent a good part of it in Zone2. I'm sensing a short recovery ride tomorrow and then lots of eats!
